“Watching the leopard from your dining table”
Reviewed August 30, 2011

Samburu is magical and it always feels like Avalon to me. I conduct my intuition training in the reserve and it is every time a special experience.
I mostly stay at Sopa Lodge, because of the good value for money and their location on the top of a mountain. When going on game drives you often get a good look at Mt. Kenya and Enkai, the mountain where according to the Samburu god lives. The dining area of the lodge faces into the bush and is next to a little water whole. I often heard that they have great sightings there, but hearing and seeing yourself is just different. I find it hard to think of anything that could beat watching a wild leopard from you dining table.

Our first stop on our Safari, we were welcome with a fresh wet cloth and fresh juice. Lodge is a great location in Samburu park, the rooms are large and clean, service was good and good selection of food. We enjoyed our stay.

We were pleased when we arrived at this lovely hotel complete with outdoor covered dining and a swimming pool. From our dinner table we could observe small animals and birds by day and a variety of creatures by night at the water hole. The hotel has an authentic rustic feel and is really well designed. The rooms are duplexes and are tastefully decorated. Try to get a room away from the lodge if you don't want noise from the pool. You need to ask for a hair dryer from the front desk. They offer free WiFi in the main building. They also have a nice gift shop.

Located in the heart of samburu nationalpark. So it's very easy to do as lot of gamedrives you like. We had our own driver, which made us very indipendent.

Rooms are very nice located in little bungalows (2 rooms per bungalow). Shower pressure was a little bit too less.

Food is offered as buffet, quality is ok, but it's not a five star kitchen. Staff is very friendly

The lodge facilities are a little basic compared with other places we stayed on our safari. The room was quite large with a large screened window. We had a patio with a couple of chairs, that we only sat on long enough to take a picture. Really enjoyed watching the dik diks from our window and while we ate in the dining room.
The food was fine, maybe not exciting and inspiring but we had absolutely no complaints. The staff were absolutely fantastic. Not enough they could do.
I would recommend not spending time in the pool. We did because it was very hot and we had an hour or so to spare. Enjoyed a drink by the pool and a quick dip but it is not well cared for.
Slept well in our beds which was good because with the game drives we had little time to spare.
The game drives in Samburu were fantastic. Lots of animals and some very unique to the area. Wouldn't hesitate to recommend.

Stayed for 2nights during our driving safari. The lodge had the necessities - and that's all we needed. We did not expect a 5+star lodge (since it was inside a Park reserve). We loved the the huts and being able to see dik-diks & birds from our bed.

We would not recommend swimming in the pools. The buffet was ok (rating 2/5), - but no one got sick. The people that work for the lodge are VERY nice & work VERY hard - so it's very difficult to say bad things. I work my flip flops in the shower and around my room (since it was hard wood floors). Seeing the sunrise & sunset was a definite plus.

This lodge is a great value and quiet. I ranked sleep quality 5/5 because with 2 game drives a day - it's pretty exhausting, and I slept well every night at every lodge!
