“Fantastic Setting & Views”
Reviewed August 21, 2012

The Lodge is set on the banks of the Ewaso Nyiro River in Samburu National Reserve. Arriving at this scenic facility is breathtaking. Enjoy your stay on the tents built on raised platforms with verandah extending outwards facing the river just a couple of meters from your tent. The entire camp is surrounded by doum palms and other beautiful indigenous trees and shrubs. In total there are only 12 exclusive luxury tents. The best part about your stay in this camp is their surprise sundowners....the experience is fantastic... No words are enough to explain the beauty of this location other than a personal experience...and that goes with its sister camps in Nakuru - Mbweha Safari Camp, Tipilikwani Mara Camp and finally Mara Ngenche Safari Camp. The most amazing experience with these facilities is the location and the size (number) of tents in total. Four different locations spanning from Samburu, Nakuru and Masai Mara yet, only offering accommodation in 50 facilities across the board.

Room Tip: Tents away from the common area are better but note that those that are closer to the common area ar...

Embarking on your first safari is quite an experience, but when you arrive at the Elephant Bedroom Camp, it really is the most wonderful pleasure ... hidden discreetly along the banks of the river in the Samburu National Reserve, it is an ideal location to observe and follow the wildlife in the park. As an added bonus, an elephant (nicknamed Obama by the staff) greeted us when we arrived ... and generally spent a lot of time hanging around the property (see my photos).

Sadly, we only had two nights at this property, and would have gladly stayed for longer: the service of the staff was exceptional, lead by Joseph the manager. Requests were quickly handled, and the service was always very discreet: for example the staff would drop the blinds in the tent while we were out on a game drive.

The accommodation itself was comfortable, clean and well maintained. At night, guards ensure that there is no danger when moving between the accommodation and the eating areas, while our tent had a full ensuite (with continuous hot water) so excursions at night were kept at a minimum.

There is an under-cover dining area, which was used for our last night as it was too windy to sit under the stars. During our meals, we variously saw elephants (other than part-time resident Obama), baboons, hippos and a large assortment of birdlife ... mostly on the bank opposite the camp as they came to drink at the river.

This was without doubt our favourite place to stay during our entire African holiday - well organised and managed, brilliantly located and small in size created a great start for our safari.

What a way to start a safari - Elephant Bedroom camp set the bar high for the rest of our trip! From the gracious staff, to the excellent and varied food, to the deluxe tents and myriad wildlife, it was an outstanding two night stay. The tents are spread out so that you are not right on top of each other. The tents have their own small platform pool in which to cool off after a day of animal viewing. Elephants can freely walk through the camp which is situated along the banks of a river. The warm breezes lull you to sleep at night. We were sorry to leave and will go back in a heartbeat.

Room Tip: Tents located further away from the lounge/dining tent have the best chance of an elephant coming by...

We stayed at Elephant Bedroom over a long weekend and it was such a bliss. Very peaceful, quiet and relaxing, right on the banks of the Uaso Nyiro river (don't go during rainy season or when flooded!!) and it's easy to spot wildlife from there on the other side of the river. At night and sometimes even during the day elephants come down to the river, right next to the tents. The food was divine and the service left nothing to be desired. We went on one game drive with the camp's jeep, one time on our own and one time we took a guide from the camp along in our car. Every game drive was unique and absolutely worth it. The tents at the camp are luxurious, tastefully decorated and very cosy (just make sure you always zip up the entrance because of the monkeys). The beds were incredibly comfy and there was a dip pool right in front of the door - which is an essential add-on, given the heat of Samburu. Altogether we really enjoyed our stay at Elephant Bedroom, it was a real treat!

This place set the standard for the rest of our time in Kenya. The food was great, service was great. Lots of fantastic animal watching while relaxing by the river. Maria (a hand-raised gemsbok) was quite entertaining, though how entertaining she'll be once she's fully grown is anyone's guess. I would go back in a heart beat! (We were there in June 2011).

We had a wonderful time at the Elephant Bedroom camp. Lots of elephants in camp, near camp, in the river and just everywhere!! Plains game were all dispersed after the rains but the bird life made up for it. Always so many wonderful birds to see.
The camp is great, rooms lovely, staff friendly and food good - what more do you want?!!
