“Fantastic Lodge and Reserve !”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 12, 2008

Hi all !,
This is my most favorite Lodge and reserve !
We have stayed here twice, as the first time wasn´t enough,(mind it still isn´t ) ! We stayed here for 2 nights again, 2 safari drives each day,( inclusive of the 1on our arrival)Plus a long 1 on the day that we left !
The Lodge is great in every way, we have stayed as 2 people and a group of 3 people, the rooms were big enough for the 3 of us with no problems.
The lodges had single beds ,wardrobe of sorts, nice size bathroom, and still a good amount of space left for all your things.
The lodges were all decorated nicely and were comfortable, even out on the veranda.
The mossy nets pulled down every night for us and the rooms were kept spotless by the staff each day.
The views from the lodges, over looking the river and up to the mountains are fantastic, you feel that you are out there, in the middle of know where with out a soul around you,(free as a bird.)
I wish i was back there again now !
The staff here catered for your every need, they can not do enough for you, if you need anything or ask for help for anything, it is done there and then ! You could not ask for more!
Again, the staff really look after the children, they love having them there, I did notice, My 12 yr old son had all the drinks and food first from the staff before we could even order our drinks! (it felt good to have 5 mins, just for someone else to play mam for a bit) !
They do try to encourage the children ( on the parents OK first) to get involved with feeding the birds in the morning, to watch the wild life( from the safety of the wall) over looking the river and for anything else that they think the children would like to do of interest for them !
I can not praise the staff enough here for everything that they do.
I love to hear Jambo first thing in the morning, from any member of staff, it puts a smile on your face first thing, and it lasts all day(Jambos as well) ! lol
The Safari drives here are out of this world,We saw more here on each occasion, than on all the other locations on our Safari´s,inclusive of the Masi Mara !
I know this reserve is smaller than allot of the others, but then it does condense the wildlife in that smaller area, getting to view more in your time span.
The animals seem to be on every bend in every direction, and in greater numbers, plus you get to see animals like the Reticulated Giraffe,Oryx, Genuk and the Grevys Zebra, I know you can see these animals in most places, but the different species are great !
The roads to the reserve are bad, from which ever direction you come from, but it is definitely worth it !
On my next safari i will add Samburu again,as i can´t get enough of this place, mind you can´t go wrong either !
I hope this helps in trying to arrange your next safari !!!!

Stayed at the Samburu Serena Lodge for 3 nights during a 10 day safari in Kenya. This lodge was really good, the second best on our trip. High scores considering both food, location, standard, cleaning and not at least the surroundings. Sitting on the porch in the evings, with a G&T in hand and watching wild animals just meters from our cottage was somthing to remember for ever. And spotting rare, indigenous animals during gamedrives, like Gerenuks, Greyvys Zebra, Reticulated giraffes togehther with lots av gaselles, lions, elephants and so on was an experience for a lifetime. Simply awesome. By far the best room, the best food, the best game drives, the best everything, of our Safari.

We stayed at 3 Serena lodges- Amboseli, Samburu, and Masai Mara. This one was the best of the group. You can see a ton of wildlife out the back of the lodge where the river runs.

My only complaint here is that the bed was a rock. That's it. My only complaint. Everything else was excellent.

  • Liked — Not as hot at night as the others we stayed at on our safari.
  • Disliked — Internet fee was a rip-off. Equivalent of $4 US for 15 min.

We've stayed at 3 Serena hotels/lodges in Kenya so far, and they've all been excellent. The Samburu/Buffalo Springs game park is beautiful and quite magical, and the Samburu Serena fits in wonderfully. It's a series of wooden bungalow backing onto the river, with just a low wall separating you from the wildlife (crocodiles fortunately are incapable of getting over even low walls). There are lots of brightly coloured lizards on the trees and walls, and Vervet monkeys pose nicely for photographs (and swoop down from the trees to steal the fruit garnish in your drink when you're not looking!) There are occasional 'raiding parties' of baboons so you need to make sure your doors are shut when you're not around. The bungalows are very well equipped (mosquito nets over your beds, lots of fluffy towels and bathrobes in the bathroom (showers only) and everything's very clean.

Meals are taken in the large open dining room and there's quite an incredible choice of food - mostly European with more than a hint of colonialism - fruit crumbles and custard sauce and other hot puddings readily available - and all the staff, without fail, are friendly and helpful. I got quite addicted to the little steaks the grill chef prepared every evening - they tasted so good and were wonderfully tender!

We went on two game drives a day - the morning one at 6.30 and the afternoon one at 3.30 - and saw quite a diversity of wildlife, although the cats were elusive during our visit. We were lucky enough to have the lodge's wildlife expert, William, as our driver and he had a wealth of knowledge to impart.

I loved both the game park and the lodge. We were there for two nights and I felt very sad to leave - that is, of course, until we got to our next destination at the Mara Serena ... but that's another review ...

  • Liked — The Masala tea they served at 6.00 a.m. - I had one each day before the game drive - wonderfully spicy
  • Disliked — Nothing - absolutely loved the whole experience

What a fantastic place to stay. We were only there for 2 nights but would have loved to stay for a week, there was just so much wildlife to see without even going on a game drive. The rooms were clean and comfortable, the food was fantastic and we thought the staff were brilliant - very attentive and always seemed to be there when you needed them without being too over the top or intrusive.

Stayed at this lodge for 3 nights in April 2005. It was the best experience while on safari in Kenya. The rooms are great. Very clean and with very good setting. In April the river was dry so we could see elephants, giraffes and monkeys just passing our room!! Great experience. The restaurant was very nice and the very fresh and good. One night while having dinner we could even see a Leopard!!! Will never forget! Game drive was very good. Would stay here again. Can’t wait to return!

We found this lodge to be every bit as good as the other reviewers. We particularly enjoyed the time when we were sitting in front of the swimming pool one evening when a couple of buffalo wandered past. You also get a close up view of crocodiles coming up to feed. I can recomend the bird walk with William, the resident naturalist. Very happy with the food and opur room.
