“Unique magical experience”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 16, 2013

A most precious experience and so many happy memories... we were there for a very special family celebration and it was way beyond what we could have expected. Each tent is beautifully and individually decorated, eating delicious meals out under the trees at the side of the river is lovely, and Oria and the staff are beyond hospitable. The game runs are amazing with elephants so close you could count their eyelashes, and we saw lots of other big game too. Finally cocktails under the stars on the hilltop at sundown with the Samburu warriors in all their finery making a traditional fire was a perfect farewell evening touch.

Oria and Iain (an elephant zoologist) make this place magical and purposeful. The food is great and the accommodations lovely. The Samburu warriors are delightful and really add a lot of fun and a lot of local flavor to the experience. Oh, and the elephants. I cannot say enough about the wonderful day trips to see these magnificent creatures. I wish we could find a way to protect them. Oria and Iain are doing their best and are relentless in their work. I can't imagine staying anywhere else in Kenya if you want to learn about the elephants and help them, while staying in an absolutely delightful place.

Room Tip: They are all tents. They are all good rooms.

We loved every minute of every hour of every day we spent at Elephant Watch Camp. For a week, it was living the African dream. We saw the most beautiful wildlife and shared truly unforgetable experiences with Alfred and Bernard, the best of guides. The Camp is beautiful, artistic, and African. And then there is Oria, the energetic, wonderful, spirited, grand Oria. Thank you!!!!

I am very sad to be leaving this wonderful establishment today. I came to Elephant watch with my boyfriend for a few days of adventure vacationing and my God, I couldn't have possibly imagined how enchanting the experience was going to be. The first night we arrived late under the "super moon" to be greeted by the Samburu warriors and the absolutely devine couple that run the camp. I felt immediately welcome and delighted by the company surrounding us , like i had come home to have dinner with my family and friends. The food was fresh and delicious to say the least. Afterwards i had a blissful hot outdoor shower and the best nights rest I have experienced since i arrived in Kenya. The staff here are all wonderful and kind. Each day was better than the last. We spent one morning watching the elephants cross the river, saw three cheetahs, a secretary bird, amongst many other different types of creatures. The second day we had the pleasure of meeting Saba who runs the camp with her family and she is just gorgeous and delightful. She has a great understanding of Kenya and all it's intricacies. I found her insight very inspiring. If you are thinking about visiting Samburu, this is absolutely the place to go.

We had an amazing time. We stayed 3 nights with our adult children and when it came time for them to leave my husband and I we extended our stay for 3 more nights!! The tents are beautifully decorated with Orias artistic flare. The food was delicious. The staff and guides were wonderful, all Samburu .Oria and Iain were superb hosts and dinners were magical with our hosts telling the most amazing stories at the table.Visiting ' Save The Elephants 'center was very interesting where you could learn even more about the elephants. We saw many elephants and other wildlife in the park and the guides timed it so we were not with people from the other hotels. There was a sensitivity to everything at the camp. You can hike up to a plateau with a group of Samburu warriors ,to watch the sun go down with 360 magnificent views, have sundowners and sit by the fire with the warriors. The experience was fantastic and another positive was that the money spent at the camp goes to the Samburu community and to 'Save the Elephants".

We stayed at the Elephant Watch Camp for three nights and loved every moment…we didn’t want to leave! The camp itself is authentically and stylishly designed, every meal was superb, and best of all was the amazing staff…almost all hired locally from the Samburu community. Our host and guides were exceptional. We had many incredible and memorable up-close encounters with elephants as well as lions, leopards, giraffes, zebras and baboons just to name a few. The owners are world-renowned conservationists and their commitment to sustaining the environment and supporting the local community are to be highly commended.

The Elephant Watch Camp will always hold a special place in our hearts. We had a wonderful, immersive and magical experience and we look forward to our next visit. We highly recommend it!

From the moment you arrive at Elephant Watch Camp, you know you've come to someplace special. The camp blends in beautifully with the environment allowing you to fully experience the natural setting of Samburu without having to sacrifice any luxuries. A stay at Elephant Watch includes a visit to Save the Elephants which is something you don't want to miss. The Douglas-Hamiltons have been studying elephants for decades and their intimate knowledge of these magnificent creatures has been imparted to their Samburu guides which makes the game drives stand apart from the rest and truly unique. If you didn't already have a passion for elephants, you certainly will after your stay here.
