Marine Holiday House

The place is really nice, very well located for touring around Malindi. The closest beach is walking distance from the hotel and is the National Park. Although is very beautiful, it is small and a bit crowded (at list when we went).
The place is clean, the rooms are spacious, the food is great. Yet, my main complain is the managers of the hotel. I do not pretend to be hosted with high standards, but yes to be welcomed with a smile (and not with a cigarette in the mouth and a baby crying in the hands...). Even if they provided a good service, the managers were arrogant and noisy. We asked for the possibility of using the internet, and after 3 days they provided us with a stick. After 3 hours of trying why it doesn't work, the manager told me: "ah, so it seems it doesn't have money inside". I mean, she could know that in advance before wasting our time...

In summary: great place, but we really enjoyed much more speaking and mingling with the people doing the service (cleaner lady, the cook, the door man) rather than with the manager...

The single best hotel/resort/B&B I have ever experienced. I'm not exaggerating. The accommodation is flawless, the meals are perfect, the hosts are incredibly nice. Such a wonderful experience, would recommend to anyone ever traveling to Malindi.

We, 5 persons from two families, prebooked this hotel from home a long time before arriving to the coast after a 9 day safari. Our choice was mainly due to the positive comments on Tripadvisor as well as the price.

On arrival we got a welcome reception including a cool drink from Anthony the always present servant as well as the italian woman running the place. We got some information from her on sometimes a quite limited English(her husband slightly better). Our room was clean and spacious. One double and one single bed with mosquito nets attached and some furniture in dark rustic style. Roof fan was enough to keep us cool during the night. Bougainvillea flowers were spread in a nice pattern on the beds as a welcoming guesture. The bathroom was also very spacious with washbasin, toilet, bidet and shower. Drawback was the limited hotwater but I guess that we could have asked for more hours. Now the hot water was on during one hour in the evening. The last night we had to move into the villa due to an unforeseen water leakage but the whole problem was dealt with very professionally.

Food was a story of itself. In the web pages "the restaurant" offers Italian meals. Well it did but it was more of a home cooked deal than restaurant set up. You had to order the food at breakfast and the choices were few. We had bruchetta and spaghetti carne for lunch almost every day! Dinner not really worth the price you paid. Better value to go into town by tuk-tuk (usually 15 Ksh) and eat a pizza! Breakfast was much better. Always delicious freshly made pastries thanks to the in-house cook. Avoid the omelette which was made of egg whites only! Youghurt also available but only on request.

The hotel garden was nicely landscaped and the pool excellent. In fact the cleanest we ever tried. The neighbourhood consisted mainly of similar huge houses and was generally very quiet. The local beach was within 10 min walk and if felt safe to do that walk during daytime. That beach was inside the national park but despite big signs at the entrance daytrippers did not have to pay anything. Facillities included an horrible expensive upmarket lunchrestaurant with pool and private sun chairs as well as "masai" waiters. A new establishment was under construction and the basic fish and chips/cold drinks outlet might have to close down. Not many annoying "Best friends" trying to sell the snorkelling trip or safari tours at this part of the beach.

Activities were limited and the place is best for a relaxing "to do nothing" holiday The landlord offered a trip to the local handicraft shop which was good, in fact the best we saw. Maybe not the cheapest but a "no bargaining" -shop so you can see what you are supposed to pay. You could also see the craftsmen in action outside the shop creating some amazing carvings.

As a conclusion the hotel was good. Sometimes the couple running the place felt depressed and out of energy. Mainly sitting on the veranda smoking........ They also sometimes had a very rough tone towards the staff(2 cleaning girls, the pool boy, the gardener, the cook, the night guard and Anthony). If you like dogs they had two happy guys that gladly followed towards the beach or greeted you in the morning. However it took some time to convince at least the younger one that we "belonged" to the house. Our 7 day stay was maybe a bit too long but it was difficult to figure out that from home. The weather was nice and warm and we got really relaxed. If you are looking for a more activity packet stay you probably have to go for the very expensive up marked hotels.

Marine Holiday House is a fantastic option to base any Malindi vacation out of. It is a small quaint little B&B a few hundred meters from the ocean with one of the best pools I've swum in in Kenya. I'd highly reccomend booking a deluxe room as the option to have your own veranda and take your meals and lounge on the couch there is well worth the extra 10 euros a night.

As with all beaches in Kenya, the Malindi beach is plagued with beach boys trying to sell one thing or another and algae for days, but you can find a decent patch of sand if you walk far enough in one direction or another and the town itself is quite quaint with some good restaurants and shopping. If you book ahead there are very easy and cheap flights from Nairobi, otherwise you can fly into Mombassa and get a taxi to Malindi for around 5,500 KSH.

We spent 6 nights in Marine Holiday House and really liked the hotel. Everything is very well taken care off: food, rooms, pool; it all looks tidy, clean and pretty. The hotel is small and therefore quiet and has a friendly atmosphere. The food is delicious (we recommend you to opt for half or full board), although for us non-Italian people it felt a bit strange to eat pies, muffins and other sweets for breakfast, but you'll not hear us complain.

The hotel is located about 5 kilometers south of Malindi, which we found an advantage: it is quieter and the beach is nicer than in Malindi itself.

If we have to name one downside of this hotel, it might be that warm water is only available from 18:30-19:30h, but who needs warm water anyway with temperatures around 30 degrees celsius?

In summary, this hotel offers good value for money: great food, a nice pool, clean and comfortable rooms for a modest price.

While searching for a place in malindi we came across this house. As we walked in both the host and hostess were so welcoming that we prayed they had rooms and sheer luck they did. For the children it was perfect with the pool where they swam with no restrictions.... The swing bed at the pool bar is perfect to just laze around in the evenings while having your drink. The food is excellent considering we had kids... Jessica & Luca went out of their way to make sure everything was perfect. The room had a minibar and TV....which was perfect.
The staff were very helpful always at hand with a smile..... Though it was short but we had the most memorable time and would love to go back and stay longer next time.....

I thank both Jessica & Luca for making our stay one to never forget. May God bless them and their two beautiful kids Frederico and Phillipo
