“Thw perfect setting for a visit to Amboseli”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

The host and hostess were charming and so attentive. The tents are beautiful and hotel-like with the advantage of feeling like you are one with nature. The food and activities were excellent too.I enjoyed the game drives, walks and the visit to a Maasai village.

A group of us stayed in Tortilis after our car had broken down in Amboseli National Park. The managers and staff did everything possible to help us out, from getting their mechanics to take a look at our car, to even ordering a part to be flown in from Nairobi to make sure we would get home safely. All staff members were so lovely and were always offering to help us in anyway they could. The Camp has such a relaxing ambience. You can literally just sit in the bar, drink endless amounts of tea and eat cake (all provided free) while you gaze at Mt Kili. At night they serve canapes at the bar and you can observe all the animals in the park peacefully drinking at the waterhole nearby - you practically get a genuine safari experience without even having to leave the Camp. The rooms are amazing and the showers are spectacular which is so important after a long and dusty safari experience! The food is incredible and the service is very attentive, warm and welcoming. I loved it here and would not hesitate to recommend it to anyone who is looking to escape hectic city life. You will not regret staying here, it is something I will always remember.

We happened upon Tortils Camp by accident, after our car broke down within Amboseli National Park, and were towed to this amazing Camp. All of the staff helped us out so much, and made us feel right at home whilst the mechanics worked on our car. I honestly can't speak highly enough of this Camp, they even helped us organise a part for our car to be flown to Amboseli from Nairobi. Their service and assistance to us was definitely above and beyond. And on top of this we got to stay at this incredibly beautiful camp. It is so happily situated with views of Mt Kili, the rooms were very clean and tidy, and so many small things at the Camp really make you feel special, such as tea/coffee/hot choc bought to your tent with your wake up call, complimentary afternoon tea and canapés before dinner, and most of the food is homegrown and homemade. It was truly a unforgettable weekend, car break down and all!

We stayed at Tortilis Camp a couple of weeks ago for 2 nights. What an amazing stay! I was taken aback by the wonderful view of Mt. Kilimanjaro, which is always a emotional site for me. The staff and managers treated us so well and made sure anything we needed was taken care of. The food was delicious and their bar/lounge area is so nice for watching the elephants and zebras drinking from the watering hole (again with Kili as the backdrop!) Our "room" was beautiful - we sat and drank our coffee in our veranda with the perfect view of the Mountain each morning and showers were always strong and hot - a HUGE plus for me!! The managers were super helpful and sweet - even arranged a perfect romantic dinner for my partner and me to celebrate his birthday!! We went on a game drive with the funniest and most informative driver I've ever met - I can't remember his name, but ask for the driver who talks about the simba yum yum! Hahaha!

I really can't think of a better place to spend time in Amboseli. Doesn't hurt that it's fully solar powered, too, which made the experience that much better!! Thank you to everyone for treating us so well and for giving us such a wonderful stay!

We stayed as a family for 2 nights. The location is the best in Amboseli with great views overlooking the plains and Mount Kilimanjaro. The camp infrastructure is also excellent with a nice bar and restaurant area.

Tents: well equipped and comfortable with a nice bathroom.

Food: just not good enough for the price charged in the package.

Breakfast is basic and the same as you would get for a camp half the price. Fresh eggs, and the bacon / sausage cooked some time earlier sitting in the chaffing dishes. For the price paid I expected freshly cooked hot food to order.

Lunch and Evening Meal: its a get what you are given affair. No menu. No choice. The food quality was fine but just no choice what so ever.

Service: slow / average. Time take to clear dirty plates was too long.

Smaller cheaper places make an effort, and I recommend that Tortillis does the same in the future.

I have just returned from an excellent, half the price 2 nights at Samburu Intrepids Camp. See my review on this. The Heritage Hotels package was BY FAR better value than at Cheli & Peacock. Serena Hotels also offer better value packages.

Dear Adrian
Thank you for your review. Delighted to hear that you thought Tortilis Camp the best place to stay in Amboseli - its location is quite special, with stunning views of Mt Kilimanjaro. Dinner is indeed a three-course menu, however lunch always consists of a large buffet with plenty of choice. Please rest assured that all our food is homemade, freshly-prepared and - where possible - grown in the camp's vegetable garden. We do take feedback very seriously and consistently look to raise our standards so if you are planning a return trip to Kenya, we'd love to host you.
Best regards,
Tortilis Camp team

Just recently spent a quick overnight stop at Tortilis Camp, in the shadow of the mighty Kilimanjaro.
Everything was very good indeed: food, accommodations, staff friendliness and of course the drama and beauty of the location itself.

I can thoroughly recommend the site and I hope one day to come back and spend more time there.

Room Tip: I stayed in the 'family house' which was fantastic.

I had heard so much about Tortilis, which can sometimes lead to dissapointment, but our weekend was just perfect!!! From the warm welcome when we arrived, the two days spent there were relaxing and energising. The setting was beautiful, set against the backdrop of Mt Kilimanjaro, the tents were comfortable and spacious and I particularly loved the verandah in front of the tent. We had a resident dik dik who was not shy at all. Food was fresh and good...as it should be the vegetables come from their own wonderful vegetable garden. I wish we could have stayed a third night.

Room Tip: Room 1 for super views of the Mountain
