I stayed 1 night at Elerai Camp adjacent to Amboseli National Park. Flying in comfort and style with Scenic Air Safaris saved so much time and I was met with friendly faces and refreshments before embarking on a wonderful game drive seeing many groups of elephant and a large variety of other game en route to the Camp. Elerai is rustic, charming and my room was excellent; facing the mighty Kilimanjaro I could lie in bed or lounge on my verandah staring at that majestic mountain - breathtakingly beautiful. Make sure you include Elerai on your next trip. The lodge, the staff, the Masai, the wildlife, the mountain - nothing should be missed.

Room Tip: make sure you face the mountain - it is breathtaking

Satao Elerai was our second stop as we safaried through several parks in Kenya. Upon arrival we were made to feel very welcome. Our new 'home' was comfortable and, for the most part, user friendly. The addition of a table for one's luggage, would be welcome. The only possibility was the trunk, which doubled as a safe...a little awkward when you needed something out of it!. A dip in the pool, after a long drive, was very welcome. Once again, guards escort you back and forth to and from the dining room. On our first night, 3 elephants stopped by the watering hole for their nighttime drinks, just as we sat down to eat....a delicious meal. The road and route into this camp was long and bumpy...a Kenyan massage, our driver assured us...but well worth it in the end. There were nice touches décor wise. In the bathroom , for example, towel hangars were tree branches...and those towels! Fortunately they were for sale....thanks for that! Now that I have them home, I'm not sure I'll allow anyone to use them!! We couldn't get WiFi here, either in the tents or the lobby. We were extremely lucky, we were told, to have the view of Kilimanjaro the whole time we stayed at Satao. Often they go days at a time with the clouds blocking the view. It is outstanding in it's simplicity!

Satao Elerai was the camp of our choice in Amboseli. Having stayed in the bigger lodges of Amboseli before, this Masai-owned and managed place is a wonderful place in its own conservancy adjacent to the great Amboseli National Park. Access is via the Amboseli-Oloitokitok road and a bumpy 5 km side road. The location and view couldn't be better, with Kilimanjaro in your view from everywhere. The camp sits on a hill so that you enjoy unrivalled views over the whole of Amboseli from the infinity pool and terrace. The camp design is rather luxury but still feels wild and remote. Even that the bush was thick and green we had elephants in the conservancy and coming to the waterhole at night.
Service was great, and so was the food.
Absolutely recommendable for those who seek luxury in the bush, a Masaai touch and want to be a bit remote from the main tourist track of central Amboseli.

As this was our first camp of 6 we didn't quite know what to expect, we were pleasantly surprised with the camp. Sure it's a little farther out than most and you get an African massage whenever you go back to the camp, but that's part of the experience of being in Africa. Our drivers name was Sammy, he was great, we had the vehicle to ourselves, which is great for taking pictures from side to side. The stay at the camp was exceptional, we were 2 of about 7 or 8 staying there at that time (mid Sept 2013) so that made it good as was quieter. All the staff were friendly and there to do anything for you. Food was very good, drinks not too expensive. Read a couple of reviews regarding the fact there were no mosquito nets and I was worried about that but while we were in Africa (Sept 11 to Oct 15) we didn't see a mosquito the whole time, where as where we live in Vancouver we had a bad year. All that worry for nothing. We really liked the atmosphere of the camp, very well decorated in a rustic look using a lot of material from around the area, great idea. We had a great view of Kilimanjaro and it actually cleared up for us for a day, so wanted to see that. Also had a sundowner that we will never forget, just the staff and my wife and myself..very special.

We loved our stay at Satao Elerai - my husband and son and I were very impressed with the huge, deluxe, and well-appointed tent. This camp has truly paid attention to details and that makes a difference when you are paying a significant amount for a holiday. We had the most amazing views of Kilimanjaro right out our tent flap. We loved the horizon pool and the tree house getaway above the bar with amazing views. The meals were excellent, the camp had lots of books and games to try out, and the staff were very helpful. The road down from Nairobi via Emali is recently redone and is a lovely drive -- the only rough route is the last 5 km to he camp itself. We are looking forward to going back for another getaway.

Room Tip: I recommend the tents instead of the rooms - the view can't be beat.

We recently stayed at Satao Elerai and would not return there again. For the price we paid each night (and in comparison to many other places we've stayed in Kenya for cheaper) it doesn't even compare.

We were in a room, not a tent which unfortunately didn't look out over Kili but that was fine. The room was nice, well decorated and very comfortable. Our problem involved being kept awake all night by mosquitoes. I was bitten repeatedly throughout the night and ended up sleeping holding a bottle of doom so I could try and protect myself! I politely asked management the next morning if they happened to have any mosquito nets and was just told 'no'. There was no attempt to offer any solutions to these problems so the problem carried on the next night too. Friends in tents also had exactly the same issues. The least the camp could do is invest in a few mozzie nets!!

Our other issues with the rooms was that our towels were left hung up to dry after using them. When we returned to shower later, our room had been cleaned and towels 'replaced' with folded ones. Instead of giving us new ones, they had folded them and put them back to appear new. They had been sitting folded up and wet so were quite smelly and we didn't know who's was who's.

Our final issue was the food. It was fine and edible but again, for the price, was not what I would expect. The menu was limited and all puddings very disappointing. The chefs could do with a little more training and filling the food with a little more flavour would not be a bad thing.

The views from the hotel are great and it's in a really special location. All the bar and catering staff were very polite and helpful but our overall experience was not what I would expect for the price paid. It's doing a great thing by trying to help the local community but a little more training and higher expectations of staff, or a reduced rate for guests (so therefore visitors have lower expectations!) would make for a more pleasant experience.

Room Tip: Ask for a tent so that you can see Kili!
