“Ordinary...”
Reviewed August 17, 2012

Stayed there also couple of years ago, it is just ordinary hotel.
It was packed before the crises when Almaty full with real estate people but these they are gone now so do not deserve its price anymore.
It's restaurant facilities are really poor. Not an adequate room for eating.

The hotel have square plan with the lobby as a gallery atrium in the center. Therefore the lobby is quite big but not ergonomic.
The Rooms are acceptable but due to square footprint the traffic circulation is not planned well so you might need to walk a long way until you reach to your room.

The location is good and at the center of Almaty.
You even can walk from the hotel to popular places such as Caffedelia, Soho etc.
There is a park across the entrance facade of the hotel as well.

In general it is OK.

Room Tip: Try to select rooms not far away from the lobby. Otherwise you might end up walking a long distance.

I stayed at this hotel in mid-July for a business trip. This was my first (and I hope only) time in Almaty so I can't compare this hotel to others in the area. The location is good as it is centrally located and close to the tram line.

The value for price is NOT good. Our corporate rate was something like $325/night USD. For this rate it should be at least a 5 star. I had to ask for a room upgrade to get just a double sized bed, though the bed was comfortable enough.

The hotel decor is very dated and the entire time I was there (day and night) they had a lot of the hall lights turned off, which made it creepy walking to and from your room. I don't know if they were trying to save money or not. Very poor lighting in the hotel room as well, I think the strongest bulb was 40 watts.

The elevator is very antiquated and you can easily walk up the stairs quicker than it moves. It's also very, very dark.

The hot water was completely hit and miss. I found that if I turned it on as soon as I got up I might have luke warm water for a shower (after running for about 15 mins). One morning I had absolutely no hot water at all. I was told by the front desk staff that the whole city had no hot water that morning. My colleagues at work confirmed that this was a fallacy.

The restaurant was not comfortable to eat in (if they had AC in there I don’t think they bothered to turn it on) and the buffet breakfast was nowhere near a European or Western standard. They were nice enough to make me a burger and fries, which were not on the menu though, which I very much appreciated after several days of the local cuisine – try the horse if you dare, it’s not bad (just make sure they don’t overcook it).

The lack of English speaking staff was very frustrating, especially when trying to order room service or deal with one of the many problems (AC not working, no hot water, food order wrong). That being said most of the staff were very polite and accommodating when you were able to communicate.

Warning to Americans/Canadians – drink nothing but bottled water (from a reliable source) and sodas WITHOUT ice. You may also want to take a Peptobismol and/or a probiotic each day. The standards for raw meat hygiene in Kazakhstan are nowhere near what we’re used to!

MY TRAVEL PREFERENCES: I like to stay in smaller, boutique or family-owned hotels with locally unique atmosphere and with special attention to clients’ needs and good service.

HOTEL LOCATION: Good, conveniently located.

ROOM: I usually take deluxe room facing the park across the street. The room is spacy and quite clean. Has minibar (limited choices), TV (never used), A/C (works well).
BED/SHEETS/PILLOW: Comfortable bed with comfortable mattress and decent pillows.

LIGHTING: Ok.

BATHROOM/SHOWER: Bathroom is quite spacious. Bath and shower with good water pressure.
TOILETS: Good.

CLEANLINESS: Clean.

A/C: Works well and it is important!

ROOM DECOR: No real décor. Just basic bed and some furniture.
FRONT DESK: Check-in was ok. Check-out is a bit slow.

LOBBY AND COMMON AREA: Hotel has old-fashioned lobby, archaic elevator (just 3 floors, including 1st = ground gloor) and old furniture (quite worn, but clean).

QUIETNESS: The rooms are quiet. My room had some noise from the street, but very little.

FOOD: Breakfast area is ok. The breakfast buffet was simple with usual choices. The service was, as always, below satisfaction.

INTERNET/WI-FI: Internet access is free, but doesn’t work in the room. I stayed in the hotel several times, and always had the same answer to my complain, but Internet was available only in public areas.

SERVICE: Average.
OTHER: Has spa, which is very good, nice, clean and the service there is very good.

VALUE FOR MONEY: Overpriced!

SUMMARY: I used this hotel several times because of the very good service in spa and convenient location. But next time I will stay in a different hotel in search for better value for my money.

Almaty is the kind of place that can get away with it - demand exceeds demand so prices can be high whilst quality can be poor - thi place I proof of that
Compared to modern international hotels this looked tired - the lighting in the lobby was poor - the service at breakfast woeful and the lift possibly the slowest on the planet !
But the health spa - which other reviews have not mentioned - was stunning ! Lovely pool - great Turkish bath jacuzzi sauna steam the whole 9 yards
But all the above - along with the woeful wifi made this place a chore to stay in - and when you re on business these other factors outweigh the benefits of the spa
Interestingly enough the other comments on here are in line - the reception staff tell me the managers don't read these reviews - maybe they should !

Hi All,
I have stayed in this hotel for 5 days on a business trip in the last week of October 2011. The hotel looks nice, the stuff is very helpful. Breakfast is superb !
The room are very big !! in fact the TV (21") is so far from the bad that you need a binoculars to watch it..hahaha
On the down side:
1. They have only one elevator which is extremely slow. I have never seen such a slow elevator anywhere, yet the hotel has only 3 floors, so the stairs are an option.
2. Internet access - slow....good for mails but not more than this (Facebook, youtube)

Room Tip: Use the SPA....
