The museum is not that interesting and not much english labelling. The open collection of gold is spectacular however you might not get the english guide (the day we visited the guides were engaged with school groups) so in that case is a bit too much money.

“History of Kazakhstan”
Reviewed May 21, 2014

It's nice that they don't charge a higher entrance fee for foreigners. Since the cost is so minimal, I wasn't expecting such a large exhibition. There are several floors: prehistory (nothing special unless you're really into it), an interesting one showing a full-size yurt and some traditional clothes, and finally the modern times since 1991. Soviet era seems to be skipped.
Some signs are in English, many are Russian/Kazakh. It's not made to look very attractive, often the signs are low and small. The museum was completely empty when we went there, not so many tourists here I guess.

“like every museum in Kazakhstan?”
Reviewed May 9, 2014

There are definitely interesting things to watch there... however, this is definitely a Soviet-style museum. Everything including explanations seems out of date (ok, it is a historical museum, but even so...) I have been there with wife and kids (toddler and baby): it is definitely not buggy-friendly. Also, the museum was closed on Sundays, which is definitely not convenient for Almaty people working during the week. Conclusion: though there are interesting items, a lot of things to improve to make it a decent museum.

“Central State Museum of Kazakhstan”
Reviewed May 7, 2014

The museum has many areas devoted to the many cultures that have lived in Central Asia for thousands of years.
With the help of my guide, I was able to learn enough to plan visits to some of the archeological sites scattered throughout southern Kazakhstan.
Again with the help of my guide, I was able to buy several carpets in the museum gift shop. The museum provided documentation so that I could export the carpets.
I was impressed enough to go back on my own the next day.

“worth coming”
Reviewed May 4, 2014

The museum displays various periods in the history and prehistory of Kazakhstan: the dinosaurs, early humanoids and a skeleton of a mammoth, can all be found here.
the ethnic diversity of Kazakhstan is well displayed in the museum - a Mongol tent fully equipped, working tools, artwork and more.
the cost was so small - that i can't quite remember it - i think it was around 100 tenge (less then 1$ )
