A nice alternative to total meat centered national restaurants. They have great grilled vegetables, chicken, eggplant mixed with pureed walnuts and great traditional bread with cheese. There were also excellent drink options like the cilantro lemonade. Well situated across from the park with nice decor and good prices.

The Kazakh cuisine here is done very well and this was THE restaurant in town 10 years ago. As probably the only restaurant in town open at 04:00 in the morning, it was packed after club closing ours back when everyone went clubbing 6 nights a week. I particularly like their pelmeni soup, shi soup, and fresh juices. Many of the restaurants in Almaty are modelled after Dastarkhan one way or another. The upstairs business lunch was great value back when my office was nearby. A pleasant place to sit for a reasonably valued lunch outside in summer and fall.

There are a number of restaurants that belong to Dastarkhan chain: Dastarkhan, Schvabskiy Domik, Samovar, and few places up in the mountain gorge - Almarasan. The service is extremely bad, slow, you may be served yesterday bread, they cheat on checks, etc. Avoid!!!!

With friends from Almaty we stopped in here for a business lunch, and we all felt a little cold. In Dastarkhan we had fabulous hot soup, spicy lamb dishes, and an old Russian country favorite of mine which is like a fresh cranberry jello, but more the thickness of a milkshake. Strange, and delicious. We loved our food, and all felt better when we left. Good value.

Somewhere in the mountains, there is a group of restaurants serving local and Georgian food. Dastrakhan is a place where shaslik is always good, and they have so many dishes (with names I can't remember) that you always discover something new.
