“Very bad hotel. Don't recommend!”
Reviewed August 23, 2013

I was in Shymbulak Hotel this summer. It was the worst holidays ever. I didn't sleep at night because of everynight's loud music. First of all, the Hotel lets to rent its Bar for night parties. And they don't think about clients, they think only about money from these parties. At the first day there was very-very noisy music until 5 a.m because of somebody’s party. The second, near the hotel there is the Assorti restaurant which spends open-air discothèque twice in a week. I did never meet before such noisy music. The discothèque at my second night there was until 6 a.m. and nobody slept at the hotel. Also hotel doesn't let to pay by card, only cash. And at the breakfast territory they let to smoke cigarettes and kalians when I (and another people with children) try to enjoy fresh air. It is not the resort it is very bad night club.

My husband and I stayed here for a few nights in February. It was a bad experience from the very start until the end. There are so many issues that I will list them in points:

1, On arrival at 6.30am in the morning from an overnight flight, the hotel reception told us that that had no record of our booking. We had made the booking with Air Astana and Booking.com and showed them the receipt, which they would not accept because they said it was from a travel agent and not from their hotel. Need to book directly with the hotel we were told. They then told us that they had no rooms free and that we would need to take a taxi back to Almaty. Fortunately, I had emailed the hotel the week before to ask about their facilities and in this email the hotel had confirmed my booking. I showed the receptionist this email and several phone calls later she said that all was OK and that they had a room for us. Actually, it appeared that they had many rooms for us as she offered us three different room types. So much for them being fully booked! This process took over 40 minutes and no apology.

2, The room we were given was awful. It was un-renovated and tiny. The carpet was filthy, the bed was hard and the sheets were stained. The towel rails were literally falling off the bathroom walls. The hydronic heating was not working very well and it was cold. We asked reception if they could do anything about the room being cold and were told "don't be silly, the room is hot!"

3, Breakfast was included in the room price but was poor. The quality of the food was low. There were no options, you get what they give you. Each morning we were given a plate with two fried eggs (that still had runny whites), processed meat, processed cheese and white bread. One morning we also received porridge made from polenta. No drinks were included, they charged us extra to have a coffee.

4, On several occasions I overheard the staff talking about us in Russian. They had assumed that as we were foreigners that we do not speak Russian, but we do and understood everything that they said about us. Not very nice.

5, We asked for a late check-out for two extra hours, which we were willing to pay for, but were once again told that the hotel was full. Of course it wasn't, which we later found out when collecting out bags from the reception storage room.

6, We booked a session in the hotel's banya (Russian bath house) two days in advance. I saw the receptionist write our booking down in banya book. However when we showed up they informed us that someone else was using the banya and that we could not have it. Once again we were treated very rudely and no apology.

7, As our room did not have a telephone, we asked to borrow the reception phone to book our taxi to the airport. They insisted that we used their taxi driver and called his number. He was nice enough but wanted to charge us a lot higher than the going rate. And he was not willing to negotiate. It was clear to us that the hotel was getting a kick-back from this guy. In the end we used our own mobile and booked a taxi for the normal rate.

Obviously our stay was disappointing for the reasons stated above, but also because Chimbulak has so much potential. The ski pistes are great, the ski lifts are new and the ski rental is good. My advice is to avoid this place. Stay lower down the mountain and take the bubble-lift up to the pistes or stay in Almaty and drive up as it is only takes 40 minutes.
