Nice place to go! Kazakh food was very tasty just the location isn't that traditional.. In the middle of high buildings

Tried 'yurta' hall, very authentic (for a restaurant in a new part of the city). If you're brave to or interested in to try local traditional kitchen, go for beshbarmak, kumys, shavat and chak-chak as a dessert. Also the tea 'kazakh-style'!

We didn't have any problems finding this place which was recommended by the hotel my friends were staying at.
Even though we did have a bit of a language barrier with our very limited/nil Russian and the wait staff having limited/no English, we did have an English menu, so a breeze to order... we just couldn't make our mind up of what to order.
So, we started out with a small glass of camel and horse milk, slightly fermented of course... hmmm.
I am glad we had the camel first, but, if you have it after the horse milk it nearly tastes sweet in comparison. Wow, this horse milk was on the verge of sour... well, being fermented it most likely was.
That experience over we ordered some breads, herring and potatoes, manty and beshbarmak.
Manty are a dump,ING with minced beef and onion.
Beshbarmak is the traditional dish of horse and lamb, with pasta sheets and sliced onion, usually served with a bowl of broth... don't dunk the meats in the broth. It is for drinking, like miso.
I am sure our wait girls laughed themselves silly after they saw us dunking.
The little bread pillows are delicious... baursak.
The little white balls are kurt... balls of salty sour dough... you normally break them up and eat them with whatever and supposedly good with beer. Originally we thought you dropped it into the beer, but, that wasn't what our waitress was trying to tell us.
Wasn't as 'cheap' as I was expecting, then again, it isn't a third world country. Prices not too different to back home.
A fun night experiencing something new.

Ask to be seated in one of the yurts (imitation of traditional Kazakh houses) - and in addition to the great food you will also get to experience a bit of the history and the culture of the country. The service is very good (by Kazakhstan's standards)

Amazing restaurant, the food is fantastic and the owner is one of the funniest guys I've ever met. He really looks after the customers. The service was great as always. If you're ever in Almaty and need something to eat, I would seriously recommend Gakku!
After staying at the Rixos Hotel for a few nights, it was so refreshing to eat some proper fresh local produce. The chunks of meat you get were properly sized and very juicy. The bread basket over flows and none of the portions are small. Whenever I'm in Almaty, I always try to visit this restaurant!
