From when diners were diners a really good place to stop on the way to wine country. If offered grab their soft shell crab. Any home made desert, you get the idea. Almost always busy, good, if not plain, wholesome food served by an attentive staff.

A Winner!

“Once and Not Again”
Reviewed September 18, 2012

Hard to get past the very awful smell from a duck farm across the street but went in anyway. Couldn't wait to try the well talked about Sauerbraten Dinner with Fluffy dumplings that they advertise. "BIG MISTAKE". Meat had a green shine to it and was very crumbly? Didn't taste like any Sauerbraten I have ever eaten. Tasted like old roast beef. Gravy just as awful. Dumplings if you can call them that were anything but fluffy. Firm tightly rounded far from anything fluffy. Red cabbage I'm sure from a can or jar. Silverware not very clean. Nothing else to say. We will not return.

“Great little classic place.”
Reviewed September 16, 2012

the best shoft shell crabs in the area. We always get a side of LI turnips/rutabaga! Must be a NE thing as no one in Ok or Tx would even try them when we brought them to Thanksgiving dinners!

Pies were a disappointment.

“60 Plus Years & Going Strong.”
Reviewed August 27, 2012

Went there with my parents as a teenager during the 60's & went back during August 2012 & was not disappointed. Great food & plenty of nostalgia. This is much more than a snack bar, it's a wonderful family restaurant with a variety of foods cooked to perfection. Outstanding home made pies to top the meal off. Biggest change from the 60's is that beer, wine & mixed drinks are served. We asked the server about the history of the restaurant & the owner came over & told us some delight & informative stories. Great value for the money.

“A great forkful on North Fork”
Reviewed August 20, 2012

Driving into Long Island in the driving rain, we sought refuge and lunch at Modern Snack Bar. What a great choice! The decor is old school diner charm and the food is delicious. I highly recommend the smoked duck salad. We did not save room for dessert, but you may want to--you will be very tempted by the homemade pies.
