“A unique dance”
Reviewed July 27, 2014 via mobile

Awaodori is among the famous dances in Japan. It originated in tokushima. The awaodori hall is a short walk from the train station. They have daily shows in the afternoon. It is interesting to see the dance. After dancing, the cast will teach you how to dance and let you participate in the performance. A once in a lifetime experience.

“Interesting Experience”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

Easily found, only 10-mins walk from the JR station, the Hall houses a large floor of local products and crafts, another floor has the performance hall which usually has four dance performances a day. The performance lasts 40 mins but a lot of it consists of monologue to audience (in Japanese) by a member of the company who appears to be teaching them how to do the dance steps. The actual dances are quite simple and after a few demonstrations the audience is encouraged to get up and have a go, which is a lot of fun.

The fifth floor has the ropeway station which leads to the top of Mt Bizan, about 280 metres or so high. The view from the top would be extensive on a clear day, which it wasn't when we went, but we had a nice cheap meal of noodles in the little cafe there. Be warned that you have to choose your meal from a ticket vending machine (in Japanese - no pictures) and take the ticket to the counter for it to be prepared. Tickets for the performance are also dispensed from a machine but here there is someone to help you choose the right ticket.

“Best Bon Dance in Japan”
Reviewed June 20, 2014

Japan has thousands of festivals and bon dances yearly and the Awa Odori Festival is the largest, best and the most famous. The Awa Odori Kaikan (Hall) is a museum in the city of Tokushima where visitors can learn about Awa Odori, watch displays of the dance live on stage and even try their hand at doing the dance. It is a traditional Bon Dance performed in the streets around August 12 to 15 every summer. This festival, with its unique and lively dance steps, has a history of about 400 years (said to have begun in 1586) and now attracts and enchants about 1.3 million people annually. We recommend it highly and you won't regret it.

“A great fun night”
Reviewed January 2, 2014

Great place to view traditional local dance where the audience is actively encouraged to learn and join in on stage. The audience are loud and even heckling and the atmosphere is electrically charged and so much fun. I couldn't wipe the smile off my face for the whole performance.

Over the years I have taken visitors to the Kaikan and have never been disappointed. One has the opportunity of seeing outstanding performances of the Awa Odori. Also dancing with the famous groups. A fun thing!
