Owner description: Ritsurin Garden is a superb cultural asset that conveys the characteristics of the daimyo strolling gardens that were typically seen in the 17th and 18th century. A daimyo strolling garden is a type of traditional Japanese garden in which ponds and hills are expertly constructed over a vast tract of land, and you can enjoy the garden's space as you leisurely walk around inside.

This is a very large Japanese garden with a wide variety of landscape. It is perfect for taking good pictures. One can easily spend two to three hours in this park and walk around in a leisurely way. We stayed till almost evening when there was a hint of sunset in the sky. We walked here from Daiwa Roynet Hotel and it was a fairly long walk, about 30 minutes. After visiting the park, we decided to take a taxi from the front of the park. It was not expensive and saved us the walking.

Ritsurin is a famous garden in Japan, especially on/around Shikoku, and is certainly one of the main attractions for visitors to Takamatsu city. I really enjoyed the layout of the garden - your path weaves into little hidden away corners and one cannot see all areas of the garden at once. The grounds are already quite large, but this layout makes it feel larger and more complex (contrasting with Koraku-en garden in nearby Okayama city (which is also lovely and very famous). It has a lovely peaceful atmosphere and the various nooks and crannies allow you to feel like you can escape the bustle and/or other tourists a bit.

the garden is very pretty and worth the visit if you're on the island. Too be honest I'd just go to the island as a day trip and make sure I booked a seat on the top storey of the 2 deck train car so you enjoy the sites as you go over the bridge on the JR train and then head to the Risurin Park, visit the Takamatsu castle and then hop on the JR train upstairs reserved seat and head back to the mainland.

This was our second visit to the Garden, the first being in late autumn during 'light-up' time, but as this was early summer we didn't expect to see spectacular colour. What we did see though were irises in profusion, and very attractive even in the rain. The garden was lovely with fresh green colours and also hydrangeas. We were a bit disappointed that the traditional-style Commerce and Industry building is screened off for renovations, as the view of it from across the garden is very attractive. There is a very appealing newly-built gift and souvenir shop right next to the East Gate which is definitely worth a look for its showcasing of local arts and crafts.

Even rain cannot mar the exceptional beauty of these gardens. Every turn in the path reveals another perfect view. It's full of wonderful surprises. There is a shop near the exit with a variety of interesting items...a great place.
