“A great half a day trip”
Reviewed November 4, 2012

We enjoyed the place very much and some of the surroundings. Only made a bit of a mistake by not going to the nearby Shikina -en gardens straight from there.

“Nice scenery and castle”
Reviewed October 19, 2012

Must go if you stay in Naha. about 25 mins drive from Naha. A very well maintained Shuri Castle and surrounding area. In the main island of Okinawa there are 9 World Heritage Sites and this area have 3 of them. The Castle itself looks amazing, along with the different doors and gates provided lots of photo taking opportunities. Also it has a nice and easy path for the people with disability.

It was hard to really appreciate the walk through the castle. Many tourists that you feel rushed; Most signs are not in english so besides looking at the display, you can't really appreciate the history. Walk was rather long for those with limited mobility and even with the accessible path, it was still slopey.

OPINION: To be honest I was a disappointed. It was all too "new" for my liking. I am Scottish and love authentic castles. However unfortunately this castle was destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 and rebuild in 1992.

There are wheelchair/pushchair ramps scattered around. However, once you go into the main castle building there are few elevators available. At times it is necessary to take your baby out and lift them up stairs - or struggle to take it up with you (for example the throne room). However, the staff are lovely and volunteer to help! I presume these areas would be simply inaccessible for wheelchair users.

There are however great views to be had from their lookout stations. Gardens are also nice to wander around in. The staff are lovely and a few of them speak excellent English.

There is quite a bit of English explanations available however the videos (explaining how the castle was restored are only available in Japanese) and the labels/explanations concerning the items in the exhibition room are also only in Japanese.

There is a stamp challenge for children which involves them getting stamps at various points around the castle. 11 stamps = special Okinawa stickers!
