Mori-no-Kenja is located slightly outside of the Ishigaki town center (meaning that it's best reached by car) and is notable for its drink selection, its calm atmosphere, and its food made from local ingredients. In particular, it offers a wide range of infused awamori cocktails -- both fruit and herbs.
The food menu includes typical Okinawan ingredients (Ishigaki beef, pork, and goya) but also some lesser-known Ishigaki specialties. The shima-sozai tempura is an excellent way to sample some of these plants.
The restaurant is small (only about 20 seats) and appears to be popular with locals, so if you don't have reservations, be prepared to sit at the bar. There didn't appear to be an English-language menu, but it's possible to use Google Translate on the online menu and decide what to order in advance (or just ask the staff to choose for you).
Bottom line: Small, definitely non-touristy local restaurant convenient to downtown Ishigaki that feels like a cross between a cafe and an izakaya. Good for couples and for relaxing over drinks.
