Suginoi Hotel has a free shuttle that you can catch behind the Beppu Station. It will take you a short ride up into the mountain area that has a fabulous view. Although we weren't hotel guests we went there and paid for the buffet and entrance to Aqua Garden and Tanayu. At the buffet the selection of food is wonderful from crab legs, shrimp tempura , so many side choices and for the children their is even a make your own cotton candy station. The shuttle will also take you back to the station. Check their hours on line. At night once it turns dark, the place is lit up like a winter scene with Santa, reindeers, snowmen, zoo animals, trees, etc. There is even an arcade to occupy the children if time permits. If you come to Beppu, make it a point to visit here. We went after the hot spring bus tour and it was very worth the money. One cool thing - 1/2 the hotel diners were wearing yukatas to the dining room.

Room Tip: If you are like me a cannot afford the price tag per night, you can still come and dine, play and en...

We stayed at the Suginoi Hotel in Beppu in April 2012. We chose it as a small treat, mainly because of the spa facilities (see below for more details). The hotel is situated at the South-Western edge of the town. It is quite far from Beppu JR, but the hotel does provide a shuttle for the station: we had a car and didn't use the shuttle, so cannot comment on it. There were also a few car parks on the (huge) hotel grounds, which we could use for free.

The staff were efficient, welcoming and (some) had a sufficient knowledge of English. They seemed used to guide customers through the maze of the hotel buildings, which includes 3 accommodation buildings, and two entertainment buildings, all linked through underground passages and go-through corridors. My feeling was that the hotel was more a self-contained "spa/amusement park", than a hotel with pool, something which was made even more prominent by the (weird) Disney-like displays laid on the hotel gardens. This was something the hotel website didn't convey well, or we just didn't grasp it when we booked (although we should have guessed that there will be a lot of people there, with the mention that some of the pools were open to the public). This feeling was going on inside the hotel, although the whole atmosphere there was more that of a cruise ship, complete with restaurants, slot machines and herds of tourists (mostly Japanese). Don't get me wrong, the service was very good and the pools/spa were terrific; it's just that we felt it was a bit too crowded for a romantic break.

We booked a basic "Hon Kan Western Style Mountain View Non Smoking" (stated at 26m2). Our room was on the 5th floor, with view of the back of the hotel, towards the hills, which was not as nice as sea view, but not awful at all, as the hills were quite leafy; it was also very quiet. The room was on the big side and was clean. The decoration was OK, but dated. The bed was wide and comfy. The bathroom was simple (sink, electric toilet, small bath tub with shower handset) but clean and in good working order, although again a bit dated. The room had some tea/coffee making facility. There was a small desk, with LAN cable (free internet connection). The TV was a decent one, with free Japanese digital channels. We didn't have breakfast in the hotel, as we had to leave early.

What was really good was the pools/onsens, which were available (mostly) for free. The onsens were not mixed and the few private baths were already booked, which was a shame. However, we did visit the Aqua Garden, on the roof top (pool with swimsuits): there was several communicating small pools, a couple of Jacuzzis and even a big isolation pool (as in "floatation tank"). We went at night which was great for the view of the city and for the light show. If you add another spa and a wave pool, this makes a great place for water lover.

Overall, this is a good spa hotel worth considering if you want a water treat. Otherwise, this isn't Beppu's cheapest or most convenient; it can also be very crowded.

I used to work part time at this hotel`s kitchen (buffet) while was a student in Japan, and all I can say about this hotel is that the service is very good, very very fresh products and lots of choise in buffet breakfast and dinner!!! Great view from Spa center to downtown and to ocean. Dont know much about rooms, but I love their food and location!

Room Tip: Take a room with ocean/downtown view!

We decided to stay at this hotel after seeing some photos of their outdoor baths at the hotel’s roof, with a view to the whole city.
Apart from the standard rooms, the hotel has 4 ‘special floors’: Cedar, Good time, Grace and Hermitage floor, with more spacious and quiet rooms. So for this view and the descriptions they offer, we booked one room at the Hermitage floor. I should say this was the best thing we did.
The outdoor baths are really amazing and the rooms at this floor very comfortable and quiet. But all around you will find a huge complex, including shops, bowling, karaoke, swimming park, shops and restaurants.
The restaurants are always full packed. The buffet is huge and offers all kinds of food, but peace you will never find there. Old and young people, tourist groups, families with small children and babies, simply all ages are represented there.
So relaxing time was the time in our room and in the baths.
All in all it is a nice hotel to stay in Beppu, but families with small children will specially enjoy their staying there as they will find all options for the whole family.

We stayed for 2 nights with the extended family and had a great time. We had 2 beds and room for 3 on futons - I much prefer a bed so make sure to find out exact bedding configurations before you go.

The buffet dinner/breakfasts are actually AMAZING - make sure you go down very hungry! Wearing the hotel robes to dinner is very acceptable and helps make the atmosphere very relaxed. The outdoor baths on the top floor are also amazing, if a little difficult to find. The laser shows up there at night were a pretty neat touch, especially seeing them outside while in a lovely warm bath. We had a hot mud bath which was nice too, no booking required. We would stay again.

Room Tip: Rooms overlooking the ocean are wonderful.

My wife and I stayed here five times in a year since we joined a kind of inexpensive bus tour a year ago. If you live in Northern Kyushu or western part of Chugoku, you can join the inexpensive bus tours which include a round trip fee from some major cities like Fukuoka, Kitakyushu, etc. and one-night stay including two meals.

The buffet dinner and breakfast are incredibly high-levelled. (Beverages are not included for the basic pay.) I think their selection of wine is not good enough( it is a pity.), but try Oita sake or Kyushu shochu, instead. Dessert is excellent! I heard a professional from France trained them.

You would enjoy all kinds of onsen hot baths here. Our hot baths in Japan are basically divided into two-for men and women. They recently made a mixed bath where you must wear bathing suits, although it is not so big. I would recommend this hotel to you, the tourists from outside of Japan, who want to experience the Japanese onsen hot spa
