“Soak in the onsen and watch the sun rise over the sea”
Reviewed January 24, 2013

We got ourselves a room with a private onsen so we can actually be in the onsen together! (No it wasn't cheap ...) We weren't disappointed, the private onsen is sensational! It was such a treat being in the onsen and watching the sun rise - well ... given the time of year it unfortunately rose behind the factories at Oita ...

The sea facing rooms are very quiet - which is ironic given the very convenient location of this hotel - just 10 min walk from Beppu Station.

We were there on Christmas Day and so our Christmas Dinner was a fantastic Japanese feast. Loved the local beef in particular but everything in the banquet was very, very delicious. Breakfast is also very good, particularly enjoyed the tofu and egg dishes which are both cooked at the table.

The room itself is huge, our private onsen room has space for sleeping on the tatami and a bedroom with 2 single beds, as well as a sleeping area. Nicely renovated and felt very new.

Room Tip: Ocean facing room.

Me and my wife stayed in Beppu for one night at this hotel. We found and reserved it over the Internet which made it a big cheaper than if you call and reserve it, which was nice. We chose a room that doesn't have sea view since it was cheaper and we weren't interested in seeing the sea as we would arrive after sunset and not spend that much time in the morning looking out the windows before leaving again.

The hotel was a short walk from the station and pretty easy to find with the help of a map. When we checked in and got to see our room we were really chocked, the room was huge! When you entered there was a hallway in to the main room with doors to the toilet and to the changing room and shower room. The main room was really big and next to it was a separate smaller room (but still bigger than many normal hotel rooms in Japan) with a table and two sofas. It felt like we've gotten a luxurious suite, but it was in fact one of the cheaper rooms in the hotel.

As expected with ryokans the dinner was served in the room and it was a lot of food and very delicious as well. After the dinner we went down to the private bath in the basement that we've reserved. It was small without any windows, but still nice and very relaxing.

In the morning we woke up at 5 to be able to see the sunset from the outdoor pool on the 6th floor. It was cloudy so we didn't see the sun but it was still nice and quiet before the town had woken up. There were some small bushes planted next to the pool so it was not possible to see much of the sea or the horizon while sitting in the pool. But when standing up next to it and cooling off you could see the sea well.

There is an indoors pool on the 7th floor where the whole wall is a window so the view might be a bit better from there, but we never went there.

After the morning bath it was time for breakfast in the room. It was not quite as big as the dinner, but it was as tasty.

The price for the room was significantly higher than normal cheap hotels as expected since it's a ryokan with onsen. But much cheaper than many other ryokans and well worth the money.

For atmosphere, great food, and excellent service, the Hotel New Matsumi is the place to stay in Beppu.

A 15 minute walk from the Beppu train station, this older hotel has nice sized rooms, modern amenities, and the nicest onsen I've ever bathed in. The outdoor onsen, on the sixth floor of the hotel, boasts an incredible view of the ocean. I visited at sunrise, and soaking while watching the sun come up was truly amazing.

If your room package includes dinner and breakfast, make sure you have an appetite! There is a LOT of food brought into your room and beautifully served. The traditional Japanese dinner includes several types of fish, two kinds of soup, steak, soba noodles, tofu and other assorted vegetables, and of course, rice. Breakfast was similar in quantity, lots of fish, rice, tofu, pickled vegetables. I couldn't finish either meal in its entirety, and I have a big appetite. Everything was fresh and absolutely delicious!

Service was professional, but the staff speaks very little, if any, English. They were helpful assisting my wife and I with recommendations and directions to some sightseeing attractions.

Try to get a room facing the ocean. There was a great massage chair in our room on the fifth floor, and it faced a large picture window overlooking the ocean. Incredible sunrise view!

The hotel is located on a quiet, narrow street. It's two blocks from the nearest main street, and not a far walk to the train station. Be sure to have a good map, or knowledge of Japanese to navigate the town.

If you're looking for a great hotel with onsen, I highly recommend the Hotel New Matsumi!

Room Tip: Request an oceanview room for incredible views of the sunrise!

While I have been to many onsen hotels in different parts of Japan, this's the second time I had the chance to watch the sunrise while soaking in hotspring water - just an incredible experience and not one that comes by easily. Location of the hotel is excellent, a short walk from the JR train station yet next to the seaside - indeed a room with a view!

And the service is friendly and helpful. For someone who cannot speak Japanese, the staff have all been so helpful that the language barrier did not present any difficulties at all.
