“Good location, nothing special”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 26, 2014

The first twin room given to us was next to the elevator and clearly was the smallest room in the hotel. As soon as we saw the room, we asked for a larger room but the staff said there was none available for our first night. After much discussion, the desk clerks let us upgrade, for an additional fee, to a larger room for our next three nights but we spent the first night in the tiny room. There was so much furniture taking up so much floor space that it was almost impossible to find room to open one suitcase, let alone two. It was nearly impossible for two people to move around the room at the same time. Our second room, was a corner twin room and was very much larger than the other one. There were two windows and the room had plenty of light. The wired internet in the room worked just fine. I think we would have been miserable if we had to spend four nights in that first room. Our rating is based primarily on our newer, larger room, but we had to consider the small crowded room as well.

Although the staff spoke little English, there was one gentleman upon whom they were able to call who had excellent English and who was very pleasant in responding to our requests and questions. The rest of the staff were quite reserved, possibly because they were nervous about dealing with English speaking clients.

We left an item behind and tried to contact the hotel by email. Our messages went unanswered - perhaps because of the language issue. When we arrived in Nagasaki several days later, we had the concierge telephone Hotel Arthur to arrange for the return of our item. We were pleased that it had been saved - it been 3 days since we departed. We paid for the shipping and Hotel Arthur forwarded it to us and it arrived in two days. We appreciate their kindness in wrapping and sending the package to our hotel in Nagasaki.

Room Tip: The small rooms are impossible. Get a corner larger twin room or book elsewhere.

Twin bed rooms are good sized (singles are very small). The onsen is a real let-down after great ones in the Aso area - but it does have the essentials including sauna and a rock lined long pool. The onsen is indoors and has no outside view - it is used by the public as well as hotel guests. Annoyingly, wifi is only available in the lobby (rooms have wired internet access only) - even more annoyingly, there is a smoking area in the lobby - so wifi users are forced into a smoking environment. The Japanese breakfast is "ordinary" but adequate - indeed, the western breakfast is better. The 10th floor breakfast room view is nice. Staff are obliging and welcoming. If after a nice onsen, I'd go elsewhere, but finding them is very difficult in spite of street signs.

The positives:
Proximity to JR Beppu Station (just a mere 5-minute walk), a 24-hour convenience store is almost right outside the hotel, closely located to restaurants etc. I think the hotel's onsen was a bonus but unfortunately I didn't have time to soak in it at night. Clean rooms, decent enough for my one-night stay. I'd mainly used this hotel as a rest stop for the night (checked in at 10pm, checked out the following day at 7am for an early-morning train) and it fulfilled all my basic needs.

The minus:
This hotel lacked character, and the tremendous warmth and friendliness from the staff (I'd stayed the previous night in a ryokan, also in Beppu, which had impeccable service). That said, however, I wasn't expecting much from a budget hotel.

In-room wi-fi would have been great. (wi-fi only available at the hotel lobby)

Hotel Arthur is a very nice hotel close to Beppu station. You can easily walk around the city by foot.
The rooms are small, but a little bigger than a usual Japanese room. Comfortable bed.
The staff was not able to speak English.
A lovely city with great hot springs.

only a 2 minute or so walk to the main city station of Beppu. Do take note that while you will be conveniently located near the necessary places to get food, bars, malls, major train station and bus stop, you are a bit far from most tourist spots. Beppu is serviced by 2 bus companies and getting a day pass (700yen "Beppu Free" for Kamenoi Bus) would be most useful.

By western standards, the rooms are small, but if you have stayed in hotels in Japan, you know that space is a luxury and this hotel's rooms are a little bit bigger than the usual, esp. if you are in a single-bed room.

Breakfast is served on the 10th floor, giving you a more than 180 degree view (there are very few tall buildings around the hotel) facing the mountain side. you can also view a part of the ocean. If breakfast is not included in your hotel package, then it would set you back 1,000yen(+5% tax). You can choose between a Japanese or Western set; and in addition, drinks, bread, salad, yogurt are included as a complementary buffet. I tried both sets, and they were both good, but if you are a health buff or would want to try Japanese breakfast, then go for the Japanese one.

I am not sure if the staff use English because I speak Japanese.

There is Wi-fi in the hotel, limited access to 10minutes for 2 times per day. but the odd thing is you need an e-mail address to register and confirm first, but you need internet to do that (?!?) anyway, there are computers, scanners, printers, photocopiers available for a fee. there is also LAN available in the rooms.

There is a vending machine in the lobby that serves free drinks (limited kinds) in the morning. I can't remember exactly the time it starts and stops vending because I always just hung out in the breakfast area with the beautiful view instead, where i likewise enjoyed free-flowing coffee, milk, and hot chocolate!

Finally, there are public baths available in the early morning and afternoon. These use natural spring water (FYI: Beppu is famous for hot springs) from 2 different sources, so you can choose from the 2 different baths.

Excellent value. Excellent location, just a three-minute walk from the train station. Staff speaks English well enough to route incoming international telephone calls reliably. Internet connection is fine. (Mostly) Japanese-style breakfast is reasonably priced.

This is a basic hotel in Beppu. The rooms are tiny. There is a free internet, however, and the staff do speak good English (which is not a given in Beppu). The location is central, although Beppu quite small so you should be able to walk around from anywhere.
