“Great hostel in great location...lots of fun!”
Reviewed April 21, 2014

I stayed here during my cycling tour of Japan...the hostel is located real close to Beppu Station and there are many onsen choices within walking distance. There are also many places to eat around the area and the staff was super helpful in finding whatever I asked of them. There was also a good number of travelers from all over here which is great...they also have a bar where you can socialize with other hostel members.

I stayed here while traveling alone. The room was clean and good. There is a nice little spa downstairs. Free coffee for breakfast. I got a coupon for a free drink at the bar owned by the hostel. Spent a lovely evening there chatting with other people from the hostel Staff was very friendly and helpful.

We had booked a room with private bathroom.

Location - 10 minutes walking from the JR Beppu station.

Rooms - The rooms were clean and had tatami flooring with separate mattresses provided. Has that little Japanese house experience. The quality of the mattresses was good. The bathroom was clean but not well maintained. They also have common bathrooms for people who booked rooms without bathrooms. The rooms have all information about local attractions and places to visit.

Kitchen - Was common and fully equipped. It is clean but looks little old. The kitchen has a television. There is no laundry facility and you may have to go outside though nearby.

Common Living Room - It is a Japanese style and quite small in size. If one group is sitting then it is difficult for you to get accommodated.

It is a local experience - You need to keep your shoes outside and then wear the shoes provided by them. There are no lifts, so if you have luggage then you will have to carry them on 1st or 2nd floor where your room is.

Onsen - They have an onsen (hot spring) which is free. Separate for men and women. This is what my family enjoyed the most. Japanese onsen rules apply. It is open all night and closed for few hours say from 11 am to 3 pm for cleaning.

Staff is friendly and speaks English.

I would recommend this place as you experience local Japanese living.

Room Tip: It is best for backpackers and budget travelers. Please keep in mind that it is a hostel and not a h...

Me and my travel buddy spent a day in Beppu and, being a big fan of the Khaosan Tokyo hostel chain, I decided to book a twin room for that night.

The hostel is walking distance from JR Beppu station but snugly tucked within an array of maze-like alleyways so I recommend obtaining an access map when seeking it out. The two of us managed fine using Google maps, and you know you're at the right place when you see a large red vertical sign protruding out from the row of buildings proudly proclaiming 'Khaosan Beppu'. There is a footbath outside the entrance, a very lovely touch.

Checking in was a smooth process: the lovely lady at the reception counter spoke impeccable English as she processed the administration and briefed us about the place. We also obtained a simple map of the town that highlighted recommended eateries and bathhouses.

Our twin room was the smallest on the 2nd floor, a simple affair with a bunk bed and a small desk. There was sufficient room to dump our luggage and move around. WiFi throughout the building was reliable and internet connection was fast. The beds and sheets were clean and comfy.

The common room on the first floor had a welcome atmosphere but smelled faintly of cigarette smoke, which was to be expected since it was the only place you could smoke in the building. It did not bother us too much since we did not really use that room. There was a humble collection of manga and books in there as well. In the reception hall computer terminals with Internet access and a public phone were available, and plenty of maps and guides on how to get around in Beppu. You could brew tea and coffee in the kitchen for free, and there are plenty of amenities and cutlery for cooking, everything you'd expect to find in a kitchen.

Also, what set this hostel apart from all its Khaosan Tokyo counterparts is the fact that it has an onsen bath. The bathtub was a tiled pool of clear hot water, no-frills but no less a luxury. You don't have to worry about sporting tattoos if you wish to bathe here since they have no such restriction.

Without a doubt, I would stay here again if I ever found myself in Beppu. It was a warm, pleasant experience from start to finish, and its quiet location and many comforts gave me a very restful sleep that night.

(The receptionist girl was very pretty, I wish I had at least gotten her name.)

It was cheap and we liked the tips of Beppu onsen and cozy manga room. Free internet was useful. Though there are a lot of cheap places in Beppu and I guess this was not the most reasonable place for the quality. The room was stinky , so does the changing room of the bath room(It's not the smell of Hot spring). Place wasn't so clean. People in the reception are fine but the person in the evening and morning both gave me a wrong information, wrong direction and completely wrong time table. So I had to ask people on the street and had hard time.

Close to some cool spas and they even have one in the hotel. The kitchen is just amazing everything u might need, and they even have a little free food. There is a store where you Can get food and supplies. For a backpacker this is worth stopping by for a few days:)
