We stayed at hotel Lorelei for one night to visit Huis Ten Bosch, the location was perfect, just outside of HTB next to the JR Station.

The hotel was serviceable, and there is an inhouse onsen, though we didn't use it - reserved time slots are not suitable with our HTB visit.

We also visited at the right time, the mountain fog had just rolled in and made the whole place quite ... interesting.

Pro tip for the people who are visiting, make sure u book and reserve ur tickets TO and FROM HTB early, or you might have to take on reserved seats, which are quite chaotic.

I would highly recommend the Lorelei Hotel. The staff are incredibly helpful and one staff member speaks perfect English. The hotel has a beautiful location overlooking Huis Ten Bosch with the distant hills in the background. It is right by the railway station so is very convenient for trains to Nagasaki and Sasebo, as well as Fukuoka. There is a bus service between Huis Ten Bosch and Nagasaki airport which is in Omura.

My wife injured her foot badly and we had to extend our stay by several weeks. The hotel was incredibly helpful spending over an hour trying to find us an English-speaking doctor (in fact it turns out most of the doctors speak English) and later contacting the Immigration Office in Nagasaki as we had to extend our visa.

If you are planning to visit Nagasaki Bio Park to see the capybaras this is the place to stay as they Biopark bus, which is free, runs from the Lorelei Hotel to the Bio Park.

There is an excellent restaurant and people comes from miles around for the onsen.

The hotel is a bit old, but clean . Room size is okay for two people, about 25 square meters, Bathroom is small and a little bit smelly. However, we took shower in spa, and didn't use bathroom much, So, it was okay. Hot spring is good. Highly recommended to use the outdoor spa if weather is nice, very comfortable. The biggest advantage about the hotel is its price and location, only 5 min from the JR station. It's very convenient for us to catch the morning train to Nagasaki.

After a 6 hour red eyed midnight flight (really hate such flight timings!) from Singapore, we arrived at the Fukuoka airport. After customs, turn to the right to look for the red Tisco counter and purchased our 5 days All Kyushu pass, 17,000 yen each. We then waited at the airport for a 9.22am direct bus ride to Sasebo (2,000 yen each). Had lunch and did some shopping at the Sasebo JR station before taking a 4 stop train ride to Huis Ten Bosch stop.

The Hotel Lorelei was easily recognisable instantly, and located closest to the beautiful train station. Although the official check in time was 3pm, we mentioned that we were tired from an overnight flight, and were allowed to check in at 1pm - much much appreciated, domo arigato! Having booked a twin room and requested for a higher floor room, we were given a spacious room on the highest 7th floor (room 709) - mistake, as there is a skylight with no curtains in the ceiling, for all 7th floor roms so much so that your room would light up at about 6.30pm in late October. So, forget about getting extra sleep or sleeping late.

Having been to Japan many times, we were quite accustomed to smaller rooms. However, our room here at about 24sqm was fine, as there were two chairs and a marbled table for light meals in the room. Views were very nice indeed, are mostly of the Huis Ten Bosch theme park. Room was very quiet and there were two Taiwanese and two Korean TV channels here, a surprise and reward for us Chinese speakers - nice! Wifi was free and fast, too.

Hotel staff were all middle aged here, courteous and could speak simple English. Breakfasts was quite good with a rather huge range of foods. The buffet dinner at 3,800 yen each was also of good value - imagine steam crabs and Japanese beef? We also paid the 1,300 yen for an hour of private onsen - rather nice but with regretfully, there were no views as its located on the 2nd floor of the Hotel.

Now, the negatives of the Hotel - its rates was perhaps reasonable for the touristy area especially if you compare it with the 6 theme park hotels opposite but it was the most expensive hotel among our 3 hotels, 8 nights stay on this trip. Thus, in Japan as whole, this hotel had represented somewhat poor value! Room was a little dated, furniture had seen better days, not very well maintained and the bathroom with a tub (no shower) was the smallest I have seen throughout my travels all around the world - the tub was so high that it is somewhat risky getting in and out of it. Like they had said, you could not possibly have swung a cat in that small little space!

Beds were also really hard, even for Japan and was the hardest beds in this trip, it even felt that there was little or no spring in it ??? Near the bathroom, there is this automatic sensor light which might wake up your partner if you visit the bathroom/toilet late at night - stupid idea! There were only 4 hangers in the room, 2 pillows (had to request for extras to use as bolsters) and the slippers were re-usable ones, yucks!

Overall, our stay of two nights at this Hotel was fine, neither good nor too bad. Of course, if I had to choose all over again, I would certainly choose the cheapest theme park hotels, with absolutely no views or any views at all. Both the JR Okura and Hotel Amsterdam looked really nice, with free entrance to the Huis Ten Bosch theme park. So our advice would be - if you intend to stay only one night, do stay at the theme park hotels. But if you want to stay two or more nights in the area, then you would certainly save some money by choosing this hotel.

As of October 2013, the day time entrance ticket to Huis Ten Bosch is 5,600 yen (or was it 5,900 yen?) each while the after 4pm Moonlight ticket is only 3,900 yen each. The theme park is for everyone, even adults like us will be thrilled, there is much to do and much to see, with heaps of shopping and restaurants in it. To properly tour the huge park, you would need at least two nights, with Christmas light up from the first weekend of November, so plan well ahead and you would enjoy the Huis Ten Bosch theme park even more!

Room tip: Select a 2nd to 4th floor room (all are spacious) or 5th to 6th floor (ending with larger numbers, like 08, 09, 10, 11, 12). Avoid 7th floor rooms - too bright for sleeping in!

Location : perfect! Just across the road from JR Huis Ten Bosch station. We arrived at the station and immediately dropped our luggages at the hotel before going to Huis Ten Bosch.

Room: we stayed at a twin room on the 7th floor. Great view of Huis Ten Bosch. Room is comfy, clean and spacious.

Staffs: Staffs do not speak much English but they understand what we said with no problems. Very friendly and helpful.

Overall, it is a nice hotel and the price is much reasonable than the hotels inside Huis Ten Bosch theme park. Also it is much easier to drop our luggage there comparing to the need to take it with us to the park if we booked one of those more high end hotels inside Huis Ten Bosch.
