Kumamoto Castle is an impressive castle located in the centre of Kumamoto City. The castle was built in the early 1600s and has stone walls, moats, turrets, halls, pavilions, shrines and a palace building.

I walked up to the top floor of the castle and got a great view of Kumamoto City.

Nearby is the Honmaru Goten Palace which has rooms adorned with colourful Japanese screens and artefacts.

Tip to visitors: Get the “Guide of Kumamoto Castle Touring Course” from the ticket-office and take one of the three tours of the castle that are listed in the Guide.

The castle grounds was much bigger than expected, and a bit of a walk to get to. The sights from the outside were more interesting to me, the inside of the castle was a informative museum, though by the time we climbed up to the 6th flight of stairs the content seemed less worth it. A film crew was blocking the top floor when I was there so perhaps I missed the view from the top of the castle.

Kumamoto castle is situated on a huge site comprising of towers, turrets, turret gates, huge stone walls and beautiful gardens. It is about 3 km from Kumamoto station and you can get there by taking the 100 yen tram from outside the main exit of the station. The main castle was rebuilt in 1960 though there a several buildings remaining from the 1600's including the impressive Uto-Yagura turret which is comparable in size and scale to main towers at many other castles. Lots of interesting information regarding the Kato and Hosokawas clans and the siege during the Satsuma rebellion. Good day trip from Fukuoka and it is only 500 yen for adults and 200 for children.

The castle is extremely huge and there are still many areas they are still trying to restore. My family and I had a good walk in the castle itself. However, the exhibits inside were sort of the same as those we same in Shimabara castle which we had visited just before coming to kumamoto castle.

There were lots of samurai in the area itself and you can find a few to take some photos with them.

Halfway, there a small stall which sells something like a bun and you can give it a try.
