I'm not sure how this hotel gets good reviews here and on other sites.

Pros: Perhaps the only pro is that it's right next to the Kumamoto train station.

Cons: The rooms are extremely small and dated. The heater didn't work. The staff was somewhat helpful, but only a few could barely speak English. The breakfast was pretty much what you'd get at a mid-range hotel in China or Myanmar, simply uneatable.

Toyoko Inn Kumamoto Ekimae provided the worst value and service from our two-week trip in Korea and Japan (6 cities). Avoid.

Room tip: Stay somewhere else.

The hotel is very conveniently located for travelers. It is a mere minute walk to the main train station for local trains, bullet trains, street car and buses. The rooms are compact, well laid-out, clean and basic. The complementary breakfast is adequate. The upper floors provide a nice view.

Room tip: Upper floors have a nicer view.

In terms of proximity to JR Kumamoto station, this hotel is really very near. It’s also near to the tram station, and bus stations that goes to airport/mt aso/ etc

However, I must say the whole area is rather void of activity. Its pretty quiet and apart from eating/shopping at the similarly desolate looking JR Kumamoto station, there’s nothing much to do.

If you are looking to stay purely for convenience, this place would suffice. But then again, the toyoko inn that is nearer to the major shopping areas/ bus terminal might be more attractive as there is much more to see and do there (and easy access to transport as well)

Hotel check-in was smooth, however we could only get our keys after 3pm, which wasn’t a big issue.

Received some free toiletries as well.

Room was on a high floor hence had a good sleep.

All necessary toiletries and amenities were provided.

Similar to all other toyoko inn there was free breakfast provided as well from 630-930 and during the 3 days I was there, there were slight changes in menu each day.

All in all good value for money, but would have preferred another location.

This is the most typical business hotel i have stayed at in Japan. Tiny, compact, clean rooms well stocked with amenities and sound proof. Free breakfast was extremely limited but the canteen ladies were very cheerful. Check in staff very cold though. The room was very small and i can't imagine staying there as a couple for more than a night or maybe 2. Perfect if your using it for a layover or as a single person.

It was what I hoped for it to be: comfortable, cosy and practical.
It is located in the middle of town, with access to everything. The tram was out there and the shopping centers were at both sides of the hotel.
