Try the free outdoor foot-relaxing hot-stream flowing out from underneath the neatly-built and arranged wooden boardwalk.

We spent half a day visiting this place. We got in from the east driving and started off with the Buried Shrine. Then off to the walking path where we got a good look at the volcano spewing ash...a really cool site with ash littered all over.

The observatory some 373m high is a must see, including all the sights at the main tourist information counter.

Throughout the visit, there a many paranomic views of the surrounding and all of them are simply breathtaking.

We ended with a ferry (with the car) to Kagoshima, a short but enjoyable ride. Saves lots of time too and very useful for anyone planning to drive around Sakurajima.

A volcano spewing ash and smoke into the air is not an everyday sight unless you live in Kagoshima.

If you visit this prefecture, Sakurajima is a must-go. Just remember to bring a mask if you have breathing problems for all the ash in the air!

Must admit hadn't done much research about the island. We took the ferry across and saw a couple of bus tours ... Make sure you book the one that goes right around the island ... It is a bit more expensive that the other tour, but the bus is comfortable and for English speakers they give you a folder which enables you to follow what the guide is talking about. An excellent day trip!

Visited several years ago now but the memory is still very vivid.
The whole island is an amazing experience. Some beautiful walks that allow you to just stumble across a hidden away temple or shrine with the dramatic tri-peaked Sakurajima almost always in the background.
Regular, cheap ferry crosses from Kagoshima.
Coming from England, it was very strange seeing umbrellas being used for protection from falling ash rather than rain!
