The ferry ride over to the island takes only 15 minutes but is very scenic. There are great views of the volcano as you go over.

We were on the Japan Railway Tour Bus, and they took us about a third of the way up the mountain to a lookout. About this time you are hoping Sakurajima isn't going to pull a Mt. St. Helens, but all was serene and the view over to Kagoshima was wonderful.
According to Wikipedia it is one of the top ten continually active volcanos in the world. I'm glad I looked that up after I came back.

Don't be afraid. Visit the island. It's beautiful and fascinating.

You'd have never felt the power of an volcano until you stand at the foot of Sakurajima! After her record eruption of sending 5000-meter of ashes and rocks into the sky in August this year, the volcano keeps pouring smoke and ashes into the sky days and nights. We were there in early evening and had walked all the way to the nearest lookout point. Volcanic ashes cover all the paths and stairs. Literally, you left your foot prints there. We were lucky to see one "big and long blow" followed by rain of black ashes. It is simply magnificient! No wonder it is the number 1 attraction in Kagoshima.

Do bring a mask with you in case you can't stand the tiny-tiny volcanic ash floating in the air.

While there isn't much to see in Sakurajima, it is a good relaxing drive to stop at the various view points around the island. Take your car with you onto the ferry, enjoy the view of the volcano and before you know it, they are asking you to get back into your car and off the boat.

The whole trip, including the ferry from Kagoshima, will take about 3 hours. We visited in the morning, followed by a drive down to Tosenkyu to have somen and sand bath at Ibusuki.

We were disappointed as we could not see Sakurajima volcano mountain clealy due to a foggy day. Walking toward the visitor center, there is a nice park with footbath, that was enjoyable.
