While there isn't much to see in Sakurajima, it is a good relaxing drive to stop at the various view points around the island. Take your car with you onto the ferry, enjoy the view of the volcano and before you know it, they are asking you to get back into your car and off the boat.

The whole trip, including the ferry from Kagoshima, will take about 3 hours. We visited in the morning, followed by a drive down to Tosenkyu to have somen and sand bath at Ibusuki.

We were disappointed as we could not see Sakurajima volcano mountain clealy due to a foggy day. Walking toward the visitor center, there is a nice park with footbath, that was enjoyable.

The day we went was overcast and rainy. We were not able to see very far from the view points at the visitors center. The kids had a great time looking at some of the historical pictures and reading up on the active volcano. Their response "cool". Depending on the season, you'll be able to enjoy "Sakurajima Biwa" loquats grown in the fertile volcanic soil. Don't forget to take photos of their "Sakurajima Daikon" radishes larger than the size of your head.
