When you go to Sakurajima island you can do a walk on a lava path. To start you have a foot bath, then you have a 3km walk where you can see the volcano (with some gas eruption), some old lava field and beautiful views from the vegetation, the see and kagoshima city.
A must see when you go to Kagoshima

The island is very easy to get in: only 15 minutes by ferry from Kagoshima (just the time to enjoy the udon on the boat that are famous among japanese people, and indeed, yummy!)

It is quite small so you can do it in one day. But it is really a good idea to have a car on the island (a friend or a rented one; the price to take the ferry with the car is not to expensive)

There are a few interesting points (the buried tori, onsen, the point of view...but don't get there by walking, it is very far!)

But the thing is the magical atmosphere on the island, with this active volcano and the dust everywhere...In fact, don't wear white clothes, they would become very gray! You can eat camelia oil cooking, have nice walks, get in cute onsens.

Small but charming and easy to get in from Kagoshima!

This volcano is still active. It last erupted in 1914. Take the short ferry ride costing Y150 which is collected on the island side so make sure you have the correct amount. Change can be made at the island terminal. For a short tour, you can take the Sakurajima Island View bus which operates from the port. There is some time allocated at major sightseeing spots. The one day pass cost Y500 (adults) Y250 (child). If can you can spare the time and also speak Japanese, then do take the bus to Shirahama Onsen Center at the north end of the island (about Y250). The entrance fee is only Y300 and if no towel, can buy one for Y100.

We went on the 3 hour tour around the island (now a peninsula since 1914). No english but there is a nice guide pamphlet that the guide gave us to follow around. The weather was sunny and cool making it great photo conditions. If raining, I would not spend the money as the views would be obscured. The volcano was continually spewing smoke and ash the whole time we were there. We didn't go to the Visitors Center before and by the time our tour was finished it had closed (at 5pm). I want to go back and visit the onsen at Furusato. I wish we had had time for that.
