Richmond Hotel Kagoshima Kinseicho
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 14, 2014

The hotel is in a great location as it is an easy walk to Dolphin Port and the ferry to Sakurajima. Tram 2 takes you to Kagoshima Chuo station, which is where the Shinkansen line terminates. If you want to have breakfast at the hotel you need to buy a token from front desk for ¥1000 (500 for children). The hotel has a coin operated laundry on the 6th floor and you can borrow a larger airer from front desk to dry clothes in your room. If you fancy a change from Japanese food, there is a tiny pizza restaurant about 5 minutes away, serving great home made pizza. Out of the hotel turn left until you reach the major junction. Follow the tramline round to the right and on the corner on the right look out for two large gnomes by the door. The restaurant is downstairs behind a pink door. We bought cute travel passes for our stay in Kagoshima but didn't get value from them. Also, watch out - the bus timetable we were given with our passes was totally wrong. Use the timetable on the bus stops and note that some bus stops have changed number too, which can be confusing.

Room Tip: Room 1121 had a good view of Sakurajima.

First Japanese hotel I had ever stayed in. Very correct respectful staff, hard to get used to people bowing to me amd bowing in return.
I am a peasant from the North of England and had to learn to grapple with all the technology of the hotel room. The card key, the multiple mode toilet, of the 5 function light which had a moonlight mode which I don't know how I have ever lived without. The room was large and good old-fashioned pyjamas were provided. From the window you can see the black volcanic ash which erupts from Sakurajima on the flat roofs, the active volcano dominates Kagoshima, a real bonus would have been a view of the volcano itself.
There is a Lawson's convenience store south of the hotel towards the port from where I walked back eating a packet of crisps until I remembered it isn't done in Japan to eat on the streets which is a bad habit I was prepared to forgo for the sake of public decency. There is a fantastic bakery to the west on the way to the station where you can hear the singsong of the bakery girls as they promote their wares..
A lady lives in a plastic bag on the pavement outside this hotel, I wonder if they let her in to go to the loo?

Room Tip: Ask for a room on an upper floor with of view of Sakurajima Volcano which erupts at frequent interva...

During my first to Kagoshima I was fortunate enough to stay at the Richmond Hotel Kagoshima for 5 days. The room was very spacious and comfortable. As a norm Japanese hotel rooms tend to be on the smaller side, not so at the Richmond hotels.

As it was only my second time to visit Kyushu, the hotel staff were extremely helpful and friendly in providing with much need advice and assistance for my travel and sightseeing plans. The hotel has a great location which travelling around the city very easy and perfect for enjoying the lovely delights of Kagoshima city.

It also has great showers and when requested I got a room with a wonderful view of Sakurajima.

A wonderful experience overall.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of Sakurajima and if you new to the city, the staff have some excellent a...

This hotel is within walking distance to the shopping, nightlife and restaurants of downtown Kagoshima as well as the ferry departing for Sakurajima. We were very pleased with the convenient location and the well-designed (but small and rather stuffy) double room which served as our base for two days. We stayed at another Richmond previously and both hotels shared the same look and feel - good layout, efficient, clean, excellent wi-fi in room, rather clinical. We requested in advance for a room with Sakurajima view and the hotel obliged! Parking was an additional 1000yen per day but we felt it was reasonable given its city centre location where space is a premium.

Just one concern: There was no safe in the room, so we had to place our valuables and passports at the reception. The desk clerk merely wrote our details on an envelope and took our stuff, telling us that he would put everything in the hotel safe. Although this is Japan, we felt that the hotel should adopt a less nonchalant approach to the valuables of its guests ... or provide in-room safes.

When we were checking out, the hotel took a instant photo of us, mounted it on a small card with good wishes and a photo of Sakurajima, and gave it to us as a souvenir. We thought this was a very nice touch and ended our stay on a very pleasant note.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with volcano view!

Easy access to everywhere from this hotel. We arrived from Kagoshima (not Kagoshima Chuo) station about 15 minutes easy walk along the tramline. The hotel is right on the edge of the city shopping area without being right in the middle of it. This hotel is not to be confused with the other Richmond hotel with is in the 'busy' arcade! The hotel is also about a 15 minute stroll to the ferry terminal for Sakura jima.

Breakfast is JPY1000 and consists of a choice of 1 of 4 'main' dishes plus the buffet and drinks which is adequate.

The room was quite spacious but far too 'warm'. The heat could not be turned down. This was really the only negative about the hotel.

Check in and check out is completed via a kiosk in the lobby, with an English option! Extremely easy to manoeuvre.

A good stay!

We chose this hotel firstly because it was near the ferry terminals (10mins walk to the terminals to Sakurajima/Yakushima). It was also near the city tram stop. Price paid was 9500yen for a twin room. The rooms were really huge with humidifiers. On the downside, the room was too warm that we had to open the windows, there seemed no other way to change the aircon settings.

Room Tip: Ask for a room facing Mt Sakurajima.
