Onsen Hotel Nakahara Bessou
Ranked #19 of 80 Hotels / Ryokan in Kagoshima
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 22, 2012

We stayed two nights at Nakahara Besso in a japanese style room, which was rather small but convenient. The hotel is very well located, 2 minutes from the shopping and dining areas, 15 minutes walk to the harbour and close to bus and streetcar facilities. We particularly enjoyed the extremely friendly and helpful staff and we had an excellent japanese dinner in typical japanese surroundings. The Onsen (japanese spa, separate for ladies and men) is worth a try - there is even an outdoor space. We definitely recommend this hotel.

Stayed here August 7-9, 2010 with my husband and our three children ages 18, 14 and 10. Kagoshima is our ancestral "hometown" and the Nakahara Besso served as the base camp for our homecoming. This welcoming hotel with its gracious staff did not disappoint in any way. The Japanese-style rooms are spotlessly clean and the staff sets out your bedding while you eat dinner in the restaurant downstairs. The local style meals there are delicious and beautifully presented with meticulous attention to detail. Highly recommend the baked eggplant with miso and kibinago (silvery sardine sashimi). Service overall was outstanding. We got soaked during a rainstorm at a festival in Chuo Park, and when we entered the lobby the desk clerk immediately gave us all towels. My husband bought a lot of pottery in town, and the lady in the gift shop carefully wrapped and packaged all of his fragile items for our continued travel. My son commented on how the entire staff greeted and sent us off each day. And the onsen is an experience not to be missed. The outdoor pool is small but comfortable, and boiling hot. The indoor pool is a more manageable temperature. This hotel just perfectly complements the authentic Kagoshima experience. I was concerned about the cost for a family of five but with the accomodations, meals, onsen and high level of service it is absolutely worth it. Hotel is centrally located, about a 10-minute taxi ride from Kagoshima-Chuo station, cost Y880. Note: as with Kagoshima in general, it's advantageous to speak at least some Japanese. But a non-speaker could probably get by with a phrasebook and positive attitude.

This one is recommended in the 2009 edition of the Michelin Green guide. We stayed in a Japanese style room (tatamis & futons). Minor problems are that there is no Internet access in the rooms the only possibility is with your laptop to use the Lan cable of their single internet station in the lobby, which worked in practice, also on the last day I finished my breakfast (Japanese style - excellent) when finally they brought my wife's "European" style breakfast (20 minutes wait). Location is great about 10 minutes away from JR Kagoshima Chuo using Electric Street cars and just west of a buzzing shopping district with an endless choice of restaurants. Ferry to sakurajima volcano is about a 15 minutes walk. The very active volcano produces ashes and dust blanketing the town, very impressive. We enjoyed our stay and would return to this ryokan.

I read the previous reviews of this hotel before booking our trip to Kyushu and took a chance, and was not disappointed. I booked online and requested a Japanese style room. After leaving Beppu my wife and I arrived at the Kagoshima Chuo train station then caught the street car to Tenmonkandori Station stop A short strole through the Tenmonkandori shopping mall heading towards Terukuni Shrine we found the hotel directly across a small city park. The friendly staff greeted us and directed us to our spacious tatami room on the 7th floor overlooking the park. The staff speaks limited English, so our very limited basic Japanese came in handy with a lot of smiles and bowing. My wife and I wanted to immediately explore the neighborhood, so we walked to Terukuni Shrine one block away and paid our respects and offerred our gratitudes for our safe arrival and enjoyable tour. We found the immediate neighborhood full of historical sites, statues, and museums honoring the city's past heroes and history. After finding a local ramen shop for dinner in the mall we headed back to the hotel to experience their onsen. The onsen is located just past the lobby front desk with separate rooms for males and females. It isn't big, but just right for a relaxing and very hot soaking with indoor and ourdoor pools. We stayed for two nights and would stay here again when we return to Kagoshima. The hotel's location is within a short distance to the Sakurakima Ferry Pier via streetcar. We've traveled all over Japan and stayed in all kinds of hotels from small to very large. This is a great bargain and just perfect for independent travelers on a budget.

I stayed a total of three nights, before and after my visit to the Island of Yakushima. This hotel is a seven story, major size hotel, but is a family operation. The Japanese style rooms were unusually spacious and the dining service was first rate. Out of my travels in Japan and United States, the Nakahara ( the family name ) wins first prize for the best hospitality. The owner's son, who is one of the managers, personally drove me to the ferry terminal and rail station! While I would not describe the decor as lavish, what was striking about the public areas of the hotel was the beautiful displays of pottery in the lobby and hallways.
