“Convenient Hotel Near Tenjin”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 30, 2012

This hotel is just a few minutes walk from Tenjin station, on the Kūkō Line.

I chose the plan including a entrance ticket to ゆの華 (a public bath). As I arrived early in the morning, it was good to be able to have a wash since you can't check in.

The hotel is also not too far off the Fukuoka Fish market if you want to have a go at Kyushu seafood.

At night, there are a few Yatai right outside the hotel.

I got very used to the small rooms in the simple business hotels and since I usually stay for only 1-2 nights in the city (for I spent most time in onsen hotels), and spend most of the time out doing sightseeing, I really would not mind the size since most hotels in Japan are of very good hygiene. It was a nice surprise for the room size is very good.

I got a special rate maybe because it's not the peak season. And the room is nicely decorated, not like the usual very basic style of most simple business hotels. The location is reasonably good since it's only minutes away from the underground trains. Yet, since the train station is so large, I did have difficulty in finding it when I reached Fukuoka by bus from Nagasaki. But once i got myself oriented with the different train station exits, I found it quite convenient (esp after I found which exit comes with an elevator since i did have quite a few pieces to take back to HK after the trip).

When I visited Fukuoka last time, I stayed at Hakata and this time I picked Tenjin. And unless one wants to be close to the JR train station, I would recommend Tenjin as the base for moving around in Fukuoka.

The location was a few blocks away from the main train station which made it a little difficult with luggage. Directions on their website is not very helpful, so finding the place was difficult. But overall the locale was great as it was near the shopping districts (as everyone mentions). The rooms were small but decent. However the bathroom was very unpleasant (cramp, old & rusty and smelled of mold). The staff was friendly and lent us umbrellas during a rainy period. They also had maps of the areas with various restaurants highlighted. Based on the price and locale, overall a decent place to stay.

All about the location for this hotel which is right next to the main shopping and restaurant district of Fukuoka. Also the best part was its also blocks away from all the nightclubs of the city. Subway station is only about two blocks away which will connect you with the main Subway/Train station and JR lines. I had been thinking about staying near JR line but was glad i didnt as there is nothing in that area in tems of restaurants or nightclubs. Ferry terminal is about 15 mins away from hotel, accessible by subway, but cab was easiest.

The rooms at the Monterey are standard for Japan, no complaints.

Hotel is only 8 minutes on foot from Tenjin bus terminal and MRT station. There is also a tourist information center on the first floor of the bus terminal building. If you end up in the B1 or B2 levels, be extra careful with your orientation as the underground passages are all interconnected with other buildings/department stores.

Besides the Nakasu yatai stalls, the other main yatai area is in Tenjin just across the street from the hotel. From our hotel room, we could see that some stalls were doing brisk business even a little past midnight. The Tenjin underground shopping city leads to the MRT station, and major retail giants such as Mitsukoshi and Iwataya, are next to the Tenjin bus terminal building.

We also stayed at the Monterey Hotel in Nagasaki. The room in Fukuoka is not as big as the one we had in Nagasaki; but the service, cleanliness, comfort, etc. are similar. For the location, access, price, and attractions nearby, this hotel is a good choice.

We stayed in this hotel for 5 nights in December 2010. This is a business hotel so the rooms are compact. Hotel rooms in Japan are generally small and you will not have much room to move around. The room came with free internet and basic free toiletries. There are no free tv channels in English so bring your own entertainment if you want entertainment.

The location is excellent and within 10 mins walking distance to the main shopping district. I've read the previous reviews which complain about the hotel not being able to check you in early. While not great, this is a standard practice in Japan and not specific to this hotel. I found the service in this hotel good. The front desk was able to give out good free maps, loan umbrellas and they immediately fixed a problem we were having with the tv remote control.

Overall this is a decent, but not exceptional hotel. The location is good and the price is reasonable. Fukuoka is a nice town and I'd recommend you try Fukuoka Castle and Canal City.

Did some research on Fuk before we booked our air tickets. We were deciding between Hyatt or Hotel Monterey. Didn't choose Hyatt because its only near Canal City, thats all. So decided on Hotel Monterey which is at Tenjin(the main area) itself.

The rates were really good. Only a fraction of the price of Hyatt. We choose these 2 because we do not speak Japanese and figured, since we have to stay around this area, better choose a foreign sounding hotel. Hahahaha!

The hotel is only 15mins away from the airport. Dun bother taking the train and changing stations. Just hop into a cab, cost around 2000 yen(one way).

Point to note: Grab a map from the airport if you do not speak Japanese. Some taxi drivers cannot understand English and you have to point the location on the map for them. If you cannot get hold of a map at the airport, note the Japanese address of the place.

We arrived early on the in the morning around 9am but was told we could only check in around 3pm. We had to drag ourselves around the area till 3pm and almost died. Japanese hotels are pretty rigid regarding the check in and check out timings. Looking back, we should have offered to pay for one more nite, in order to check in at 10am. We were so exhausted, it did not even occur to us. If you are arriving at weird timings, be sure to check with the hotel whether they are rooms available then.

The rooms are really really small, like what the rest have commented. They provide a small wardrobe, hot water boiler, dressing table and sanitised slippers. We went during winter and the central air conditioning was switched to heating instead but with the windows closed, it was soooo stuffy. We requested for them to unlock the windows to us.

Please note: After asking the staff to unlock the windows, they have to lock it with their own keys. And with the windows opened. We could hear cars racing every night after 12am, all the way till 3am. Followed by police sirens. Sounds exactly like NYC. Probably a one off(around Xmas).

Due to the dry conditions, we were itching and having heat rash cos the quilt was too thick. hahahah! Apparently they have a humidifier if you request for it.

Housekeeping is excellent. They make do with whatevert they have and they are really prompt. Latest time to make up room is 2pm.

The staff at the reception try their best to speak Englisha and translate. Good for non Japanese speaking tourist.

This hotel is a stone throw from good restaurants and bars.

Can also consider Hotel Nishitetsu nearby.
