“Great place to picnic and watch the cherry blossoms”

Maizuru Park is right next to Ohori Park so you can visit both at the same time. It is easily accessible by bus and subway (there is a stop right outside the park).

We went when the cherry blossoms were blooming so it was great to just sit in the park, have a picnic and enjoy the flowers. We got there early (about 11am) but all the choice spots were already taken by large groups of fellow picnickers. Still, it was a large enough place to find a spot to picnic on. Many Japanese brought their own picnic baskets (some too elaborate to call a 'basket') but for tourists that didn't, there was a row of food stands selling local BBQ snacks, drinks and toys for kids.

There is a jogging track that goes around the large pond and a boat rental shed (row boats and pedal boats) next to the full service restaurant.

A great relaxing day out away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Maizuru Park is adjacent to Ohori Park in the heart of Fukouaka. For me, its primary attractions are historic, in addition to the lovely walking paths (and, in late March, a riot of cherry blossoms). Maizuru includes the ruins of Fukuoka Castle, a 17th century complex that was largely destroyed by 19th century historic revisionists who objected to all vestiges of Japan's feudal past. Today, the Castle's impressive foundations remain, and offer a pleasant uphill climb to former tower locations, where there's a nice view of Fukuoka. The park also includes an archaeological dig and museum about the dig.

Maizuru Park in the center of Fukuoka City is a pleasant park to stroll in. Nestled on a hill amongst the walls of the old Fukuoka castle ruins, it has nice views. At the very top of the castle ruins a viewing platform gives 360 degree views of the city. It is at its best during cherry blosson season when thousand of locals picknick and get merry under the trees from morning to the following dawn. During this and other festival times, the pathways are lined with little stalls selling hot sake, yakitori sticks and other goodies, while highschool taiko (traditional japanese drums) groups stop at each picnic site to play a rhythm or two.
