Stayed 3 nights in the New Otani Hakata in May. The room was large for Japan - it was the size of a typical American hotel room. Beds were comfy, rooms were very clean. The only downside was that there was no WIFI. The service was very good - every one we encountered was courteous, and the front desk even helped me figure out how to use the international phone calling card. The location is very convenient to the train and subway stations, and right on the bus route. There is a 24 hour supermarket just across the street, and the hotel is just a short bus ride to the Hakata train station, where there is great shopping (the only WIFI in the huge Hakata Station is at the Seattle's Best Coffee Shop). We spent so much time trying to get WIFI in this city - very frustrating.
The breakfast can be pricey if you don't get it as part of your hotel package. If you plan to eat breakfast in the hotel, be sure to have it included in your room rate (it's like $20 with the room package, and close to $30 if you 'drop in'.)
I am planning to return to Fukuoka later this year, and plan to spend a few nights at the New Otani Hakata again.More
