“Fukuoka or Hakata?”
Reviewed November 15, 2013

Initially we were confused as to whether or not our Hakata bound Shinkansen was actually going to Fukuoka (where had booked into the Hotel Nikko). Once there though we fell in love with Fukuoka/Hakata. The people, the food, the October Fest and the shopping.

Shopping ranges from fantastic old traditional arcades down back street ally ways to modern western look of Canal City. Personally I preferred the back ally shopping but the AMU above JR Hakata is very special.

For eating at AMU I actually preferred several Cafes on levels 5 & 6 (I believe) with views to the main street. Both cafes offered delicious lunch time specials, great coffee and wonderful friendly service, and a really good place for me to relax while the good lady went shopping. It was so relaxing.

I also shopped at AMU. I bought a hat & I'm interested in some wonderful hand made men's spectacles. It's a high quality shopping centre that is very handy to JR station, ANA hotel & hotel Nikko.

It's fair to say that AMU is a strong reason for me to return and enjoy Hakata once again, soon I hope.

“Good food variety”
Reviewed August 8, 2013 via mobile

The 9th and 10th floor contains a variety of restaurants including the standard ramen staple. Also Italian, Tonkatsu (yummy miso sauce), Indian, and even horse meat. Great place to go if you're undecided. The only issue was the smell of cigarette smoke in many places, but you're in Japan.

“Lots and Lots of Shopping”
Reviewed April 10, 2013

The JR AMU Plaza is one of several department stores you can find in the Hakata train station. You can spend hours here and probably not see all of the shopping. Hopefully some helpful tips for you:

- If you're looking specifically for souvenirs, check out the stores in the basement. They have touristy stuff plus a good selection of food and food packages.
- Another place to find cheap tourist stuff is in the Daiso 100 yen store that's in the bus station connected to the train station. I found fans, koi flags, and some cheap but good quality pottery.
- The pokemon center is on the 8th floor near the huge bookstore.
- Make sure you try Torimon!! It's a wonderful little dessert snack that can only be found in Fukuoka!!

“Best range of restaurants on the 9th and 10th floors”
Reviewed February 13, 2013

We literally ate our meals within this mall for half of our time in Fukuoka simply because they have so many good restaurants, including branches of some of our favorites. It is of course very convenient as well being right above the JR Hakata station. If you have time, go to the roof-top garden for a panoramic view of Fukuoka city. There was a festival village to celebrate the New Year while we visited and there is also a nice little train ride for the kids.
