This hotel is really off the radar but such good value. We stayed here for 2 nights this month and love it. We have 3 young kids and wanted somewhere close to canal city as we had spent 2 nights at richmond tenjin earlier in the week. The hyatt was way too expensive for a large room with 2 double beds. The Washington didn't have any family rooms left and took weeks to even reply my email enquiry. We kind of stumbled upon the candeo which is off the radar as the website is entirely in Japanese.

The hotel is very new and modern and we booked through agoda due to credit card discounts. We booked the largest rooms which are called the penthouse and the riverside terrace and it was very large by japanese standards. They had 2 double beds and a separate living area with a sofa, desk, TV, back massager. The Riverside terrace room has a balcony which overlooks the river.

My favorite part of the room is the bathroom. It has a large shower area and tub which you soak in whilst looking out at the river and canal city. All very new and clean. The shower has a handheld shower plus a seat and bucket and scoop - so you can shower onsen style. Very cute.

Had no problems with the wifi though the signal dropped at times. The bed was comfy enough and we all had a decent nights rest.

The walk to canal city is 5 mins tops. Super convenient and for the price we paid - very good value. If you can afford it select the largest rooms for the extra space. There are usually 4 or 6 rooms per floor based on the fire escape plan I saw - the large rooms have only 2 per floor so it's very spacious.

Wow. What a great location. Sitting on my lounge, looking across the river to the Hyatt and lights of the Canal City. Walking distance to Hakata and Fukuoka train station. Strong wifi, very nice room, beds and bathroom. 7eleven supplies only 20 metres down the road. Staff are very nice and attentive but not much english. Minor problem because they always seemed to manage to help us. Visited friends, Fukuoka tower and shrine at Tenjin before flying to Seoul. Stay here. It is perfect

The location was perfect - on the river and just across from Canal city. We pretty much could walk everywhere. The hotel room was simple and clean - we liked that it still had style (contemporary/modern) vs. a sheraton/hilton. Of course the rooms were a bit small given it's Japan, but we expected that. The beds are slightly hard and it was a bit confusing to rent the wifi router from the front desk, but overall, we thought the value of the hotel was great and we would totally stay there again - particular in a city where the main attraction is outside the hotel.

I stayed in a riverside king room, which are the #x01 rooms nearest the elevator and are the smallest rooms. Although supposedly 23 sq m (247 sq ft), which is average for 3-4 star hotels in Japan (tiny!), it felt smaller because the room included a narrow passage way. There was a king sized bed however room for not much else - a perimeter of about 2 feet on each side of the bed, with slightly more at the foot of the bed for 2 chairs and a small table. For 2 Asians it was already a very tight squeeze..

I booked the hotel as it is newish (opened April 2011), and I have a preference for new hotels. The boutique hotel (20+ rooms) has rooms designed in neutral earth tones, and the large picture window (which you can open) with a view of the river and sprawling Canal City complex opposite dominates. The bathroom was alright, a small standard pre-fabricated unit, with standard toiletries (all the Japanese hotels seem to have gone environmental and now offer the same large refillable bottles of toiletries). There are coffee/tea making facilities in the room, and the front desk will offer you the amenities when you check in (Ladies: They also offer you face masks!). The front desk staff are lovely, although as is common in Fukuoka/Japan little English is spoken/understood. The bed was fairly hard and uncomfortable however – perhaps the reason why the hotel strangely provided a free electric back massager in the room.

There is a free LAN connection in the room however no WiFi, even in the lobby area. Apparently WiFi is available for an extra charge though.

Location: The hotel is on a small lane next to the river, approx. 8-10 mins walk across the bridge to Canal City. In the other direction it is about 5 mins’ walk out to the main drag (“Kokutai Road on Google maps), and 5-10 mins more to head towards the main Tenjin area. We took a taxi from the airport (approx. 1500 Yen), and although I printed out a map for the cab driver all he wanted was the phone number of the hotel so he could plug it into his GPS. So always have the phone number of wherever you are going if you plan on taking cabs (assuming they have a GPS) which are plentiful and inexpensive.

FYI I booked on Agoda, which offered a lower rate than what I was quoted when I contacted the hotel directly. I also stayed at the Richmond Hotel Tenjin while in Fukuoka (also reviewing that), and frankly would prefer that over the Candeo Hakata Terrace for about US$50 more a night.

* If you can navigate through the little lanes around the hotel you might be able to find Manu coffee - a great little coffee place, which earned a mention in the Aug 2012 New York Times article about Fukuoka.

Room Tip: In hindsight I would have paid a little extra for a larger room.

It looks like I'm going to be the first one to write an English review on this hotel.
The taxi driver had a little bit of trouble to find the hotel coming from the train station but we eventually found it, right on the river, facing Canal city, a huge shopping mall with tons of restaurants and shops. (1000 yen for the cab ride).
The hotel didn't look busy at all, but we still had to wait until 3 o'clock before getting our room, which was of course inconvenient. So we went to have lunch at Canal city (about 5 to 7mn walk).

We came back at 3 and our room was ready with our luggage already in the room. The hotel is nicely designed and the room was beautifully done. However, it was really small. We had room 401, but according to the floor plan, it was the smallest room by far on that floor because of the elevator. We were right next to it but couldn't hear any noise.
There was a great king size bed with a couple of small chairs with a great view of the river and the huge Coca-Cola sign (just close the curtains at night).
All the furniture was really nice, with a great TV and great bathroom (with super nice bath products). The only downside was the small size but it was acceptable for one night.

I'm not sure now, but at the time, there was no English web sites for the hotel, so I made a reservation using Expedia hoping for the best. So I can't tell if we had the tiny room because of the price we paid. (it was 141$ Canadian for the night so it was a good price, no breakfast).
The taxi fare to the airport was 2400 yen and it was about a 20mn drive.
Overall, it was an excellent priced option for one night in Hakata/Fukuoka, with great access for diner or lunch, or even shopping, movies. Great way to finish our trip.
