Tempura no Hirao is a family favorite. When eating at Hirao, you can't help but feel like you're part of a traditional gang of faithful tempura eaters, since there's such a ritual with the doling out of the goodies. Buy your ticket for a set menu first at the vending machine just inside the lobby, then saddle up at the counter, pass over your ticket in exchange for a token that the server uses to identity who gets what, and receive your tempura one at a time, piping hot and dropped directly onto your plate. The server gingerly distributes each item to you via a pair of long serving chopsticks. Be sure to load up on the all the free condiments that go with rice, such as pickled cucumber, bean sprouts, and Hirao's ever-present salty squid. It all goes great with a hot bowl of miso soup.
