“Wonderful Meal”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 13, 2013

We walked into Chikae at around 5.15pm without a reservation. We almost did not make it to dine there. However, one of the waitresses kindly squeezed us into a corner row in front of the many large tanks...and 20 minutes later ushered us to a bigger table. That being said, highly suggest reservations be made if one chooses to dine there.

The place was packed with what seemed to be corporate dinners/entertainment. My kids were to only children in the restaurant!

We order the squid (live one), sashimi and an assortment of seafood cum staples. The meal was simply memorable. The deal with the live squid was quite a sight, especially when its served alive (and quite big)...don't want to describe more but highly recommend this dish to anyone planning to visit this place. We eventually had it done tempura style and it was really nice and juicy.

Service was exceptional. We were given an English menu without having to ask for one. The waitresses were patient in taking the order and made some good suggestions.

Our family enjoyed the meal here and would recommend it for sure. Plan for app US$70-80 per pax with beer thrown in.

“Spectacular but not the best seafood”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 3, 2013

This is a dynamic and spectacular large open restaurant with both counter and table seating. Huge for a Japanese food place. Large tanks of sea water with fish swimming. Big selection of dishes, many styles - sushi, sashimi, cooked, etc. Good service by kimono clad waitresses. But the quality of sashimi was not up to a restaurant like Yamanaka. Why? Price was reasonable. Lots of fun. Somewhat smoky.

“Live sea foodies specialty is squid...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 31, 2013

We had live prawns, stone fish sashimi style and watched our neighbor ate live squid not for the squeamish squirted with lemons and made a wild move prior to being cooked...
Plz ask for th hotel concierge to book a reservation to get the non smoking section up front along the live fish aquarium to include live tunas and front squids swimming around...entertains nut not a cheap place. green tea is free, Gyokuru but not the beer is $4 per glass the usual price.
Enjoy and have fun with your meals the way you want them cook and plz ask for English menu,
Cheers!

“Best dining experience in Japan”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 23, 2013 via mobile

Incredibly fun to sit around the giant fish tanks and watch everyone's dinner be netted. The food was superb. Our dinner for two was about $120, which included sake, sushi platter, sashimi platter, shrimp tempura (best we've ever had) and dessert. Excellent value for an unforgettable meal.

“Great and tasty (4.5 points)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2013

This is a very traditional and famous Japanese restaurant in Fukuoka. My family and friends (5 persons) visited there for dinner during our stay in Fukuoka. After a warm greeting, a sincere young waitress took us upstairs to a big and cosy private dining room. Regarding the food, we ordered several types of dishes such as sushi plate, assorted sashimi, hot pots, tempura, uni rice bowl, etc. All of them are very nice, in particular the sushi plate. We cannot help make the second round order for the delicious sushi. As usual, the service is very good and attentive in this type of Japanese restaurant. There are two waitresses who specially served our table (room). They also helped prepare the hot pots for us in an orderly manner. At last, when we depart, the two ladies also kindly accompanied us downstairs to see us off. Though the price is slightly on the high side (still very reasonable when compare with some of the so called top Japanese restaurants in Hong Kong), given the food quality and services, this is a good dining place in Fukuoka if you like Japanese food. Please also note that they have the English menu but most of the staff does not speak English.
