Wakayama-jo is probably the iconic tourist spot in Wakayama-shi and is worth a visit if you are in the area, especially if you have never been to a Japanese castle. The original castle was lost in WWII fire bombing so this is a version rebuilt in the late 1950s. As such, it lacks the authenticity of castles still largely in their original state such as Himeji-jo. However, this recast version was done as well as could be expected. The displays were interesting to browse though only the placard titles were in English. I found that one can also get a good view of Wakayama from the top level. Probably the nicest feature of the castle were the lovely grounds, which were extensive and relaxing to stroll. The grounds were free while the castle was just 400 yen to enter. For the price, it was a worthwhile visit. Beware of the fact that reaching the castle can be a somewhat strenuous walk uphill.
