“Worthwhile Stop”
Review of Wakayama Castle

Wakayama Castle
Reviewed July 22, 2013

Wakayama-jo is probably the iconic tourist spot in Wakayama-shi and is worth a visit if you are in the area, especially if you have never been to a Japanese castle. The original castle was lost in WWII fire bombing so this is a version rebuilt in the late 1950s. As such, it lacks the authenticity of castles still largely in their original state such as Himeji-jo. However, this recast version was done as well as could be expected. The displays were interesting to browse though only the placard titles were in English. I found that one can also get a good view of Wakayama from the top level. Probably the nicest feature of the castle were the lovely grounds, which were extensive and relaxing to stroll. The grounds were free while the castle was just 400 yen to enter. For the price, it was a worthwhile visit. Beware of the fact that reaching the castle can be a somewhat strenuous walk uphill.

We had a day to kill and decided to head down to Wakayama to check out this castle as we'd heard good things, and we were not disappointed. The castle itself is reasonably small and not as impressive as say, Osaka Castle, but where it lacked in size it made up for by having absolutely stunning grounds and gardens surrounding it. We visited in winter so I can only imagine how beautiful it would look in spring or autumn. The gardens were immaculate, exactly how you always imagined a traditional Japanese garden to be.

Inside the castle itself we saw armor and weapons on display which was cool, and the view from the top of the castle of the surrounding cty was beautiful. The train ride to Wakayama from Osaka was also nice, starting off suburban before gradually transforming into beautiful countryside vistas. If you have limited time in Japan I probably wouldn't waste a day making a trip specifically to see it, but if you have time to spare and are in Osaka its most definitely worth a look !

We initially walked around the park, which was absolutely beautiful. There's a small garden area with a tea room. Unfortunately it was closed for the day. The Ohashi Rouka bridge was also closed off due to some sort of construction.
There were feral cats that lived around the park, but they don't bother anyone and are wary of visitors.

It's a slightly uphill climb to get to the top of the park, which is where the castle is situated. Inside the castle is a lot of historical items like clothing and poems. Photography isn't allowed inside, but if you go to the very top, you can take 360 degree pictures of Wakayama. I would recommend going just before they close as there was a beautiful sunset during that time!

We walked 20 min from Wakayama JR station to Wakayama Castle. It is very old and interesting place. There are many historical things inside Castle. It is surrounded by very nice park.
