Ukimi-do temple is a floating shrine on lake Biwa. Coupled with other sites along lake Biwa it can be incorporated into a day trip from Kyoto. I took the train to Katata station, Shiga, then walked about 20 minutes using my GPS. I got there just in time for sunset and got some nice shots from the beaches on both sides of the shrine.

I was very surprised that to enter this temple and shrine was 300 yen after reading here that it was free! I was informed that most manned temples (understandably) charge an admission fee. This temple was very peaceful and tranquil. There was a small stand to purchase talismans and fortunes and informational pamphlets in Japanese or English. I enjoyed sitting on a brick wall nearby to watch turtles swimming in the shallow water. Make sure you check out the ceiling in the temple! It's stunning. This small spot gives you a lot of bang for your buck- very beautiful. There's something to look at everywhere you look!

The Ukimido Zen Temple in Otsu is a small and beautiful temple overlooking the lake right in front Biwako (the largest lake in Japan). Literally surrounded by the peace and tranquility of a secluded temple zen this is a gem of beauty. Absolutely free of charge, you can give a small donation or buy one of the many souvenir at the shop. The temple itself is located along a walkway built on stilts over the lake. The view is fantastic and it is absolutely inevitable visit here.
