Very convenient as it is just near the station and close to the visiting places. BUT, service is poor. We reserved a non smoking room and got a smoking one! We had to show our papers to get the non smoking one.

We stayed for three nights in August 2013. Hotel was located next to the Nara railway line which is handy when using a JR Rail Pass. We were upgraded to a larger room (1000 Yen a night), which gave us a large comfortable lounge. The beds were comfortable and the room was clean. Unfortunately there was only two power points. One had to be used to plug in a router so we could get wii fi for our IPads. The other power point was near the sink in the bathroom. When people travel with phones, cameras, tablets you need access to well placed power outlets.
Nara was great. We will return.

Room Tip: Don't know if the upgrade was worth it.

Me and my family stated in the hotel in the beginning of Aug. 2013. Very nice and clean Hotel, Like all hotels of the Nikko chain. Conveniently right next to the train station, but you'll never hear the trains. Rooms are little small. Very clean. The stuff are very helpful and kind service. has a very good parking down the hotel. In middle of town and close to the main street and Attractions- Shrines, The Nara Park with its 1,000 of Bambi (must see), Shopping, etc.

Room Tip: You'll to Drive to the NARA PARK OR take a Train. Its not a walking distance (In my Opinion)

Could see the hotel as our JR train approached the station, but there was little signage to get us to the lobby. We just could not find the entrance. The lobby turned out to be on the 3rd floor. It was a large, spacious, attractive lobby with restaurants off to the side. Restaurant patrons didn't give a hoot about standing around gossiping, and would not let us pass with all our bags. We had arrived a little early and the check in staff said there were no rooms available. We pressed the issue and suddenly there were rooms, but we were asked to pay an additional $65 US for each hour before 1 pm to go into a room. All other hotels we had used on this trip (4 of them) had let us have our room an hour or two earlier than stated check in without any extra payment. We were disappointed.

Things quickly went from bad to worse with the Japanese staff. Asked several questions about the sights and/ or information centre and were given the run around. Didn't want to help. Pretended they couldn't understand. Eventually found a French gentlemen in check in who could help us with our queries. We decided to leave our bags and found several places to eat lunch around the station and down Sanjodori Street.

The furniture and decor in the room were rather dated and austere. I really liked the chocolate self patterned curtains though. The room had all the necessary amenities of a hotel at this price standard, but the bathroom was small, plastic-y and smelled badly of sewerage on our arrival. This cleared when we put the air con on. The room was spacious for Japanese hotel rooms, and quite clean. We had enough space to spread out the contents of our bags, which is important to us. Our view was over the parking lot of the railway station, but it was quiet. We had a room on the 9th floor.

Our impression of the hotel was definitely tainted by the poor attitude of staff on our arrival and we couldn't wait to leave. A hotel nearer the attractions might have been a better choice.

There is a rather large supermarket in the basement of the JR Nara Station. Lots of other food and clothing shops inside the station as well.

Also Nara City Tourist Information Office is in the basement of Kintetsu Nara Station facing Sanjodori Street.

Be aware that the town closes down and goes very quiet around 4 pm when the tourists get back on their trains to Osaka and Kyoto.

Hotel Nikko is part of a brand name that in its heyday was very good but now superceded by fancier hotels. The best thing about this branch, Hotel Nikko Nara, is that it is just next to the JR train station in Nara: you cant get any closer than this. Upon arrival, you will be impressed by the very nice lobby, and there are some nice restaurants with lots of events such as weddings, conventions, etc. So it is a fairly busy hotel. But once you get to your floor, the hallway or corridor is really long -- they put lots of rooms on one floor, and it must be the lengthiest walk for me ever to my room. And inside the room, it seems like a business hotel: clean, functional, simple design, not fancy, not spectacular, something you will neither complain or rave about. I dont know about other hotel options in Nara, but this one seems like a sure bet for convenience even if the rooms are bare.
