“Wonderful view”
Reviewed January 26, 2014

This temple sits on top of a hill overlooking Nara. There are many stone lanterns leading up the hill to the grounds, and lots of wonderful photo ops. The temple is lovely, and peaceful, with lots of brass lanterns and a great view also. It is a short and worthwhile walk from Todaji Temple, and you can continue along the road to the Grand Shrine after your visit here.

“One of the most peaceful and interesting temples in Nara.”
Reviewed January 10, 2014

Of course, you cannot compare it to the great Todaiji ... but, not far from there, Nigatsu-do makes for a very nice stroll thru the park. It's a little up hill but, taken slowly it shouldn't prose a problem (my Dad has bad knees but, even he said it was well worth it). The view from the top is very good, we we're lucky we had beautiful clear weather so, we could see for quite some distance.
The various types of lanterns are very interesting to look at. It's a great place to just stop and think for awhile - they even have benches to sit on - which is not a common occurance at most temples. We were lucky the day we went, we had the place pretty much to ourselves.
It was very peaceful and fascinating ...

“More genuine than Todaiji?”
Reviewed December 18, 2013

The temple is situated right next to Todaiji temple in Nara Park. The buildings looked older than Todaiji and there is one situated up on a small hill that had a great view. There is also a tea house that served complimentary tea (you're supposed to clean your own teacups and fill your own cups with tea though). There are a number of other old buildings as well scattered throughout. It seemed like a more genuine temple than Todaiji. Perhaps these were the remnants of the original temple and Todaiji was built later after this temple attained a bit more success in attracting money? Either way, it's still a temple and I was "shrined out" by this time.

“A full view of Nara Park and Todaiji”
Reviewed December 10, 2013

After a five minute climbing from Todaiji you can reach this temple. It is free and also well maintained. In the night, the lanterns illuminate the path inside it. The actual temple is built in a high level so you can have a full view of the city until the mountains. The is also a tiny shrine in the top of the mount where this temple is built.

It's uphill to get there but worth the effort. All the lanterns are beautiful. Great vista from the top. Lots of small shrines keeps you wanting to see what is next.
