I went with my sons to Japan , one of the best attractions it was when we arrived to Nara city to see the Temple and Nara National Museum , it´s a small town and you have just to walk direct the main street where you can find different type of restaurants , after this you walk through a Park full of deers all the way until the entrance to a beautiful gardens before the big Temple and the Museum.
It was really enjoyable to feed the deers or just to play with them when they come close to you , they are small and everything is really safe.
If you can come with your teens sons or older it will be really a pleasent time.

Deers were everywhere even though it was raining on that day we visited. June is a good time to see baby deers; we spotted one or two. Best to alight at kintetsu nara station, and walk to Kofukuji, followed by Todaiji temple.

Nara is an amzing city with stunning things to see. If yuo like deers you'll be the happiest person ever. They're everywhere around and one can touch and feed them.

I visited Nara in May 2013 with my family. We were based in kyoto and we went to Nara for the day. We took the early morning shinkansen(bullet train), and got there by 10am - it's roughly a 2 hour ride). It's a short walk from Nara station to the park, but since we had kids with us, we didn't want to tire them out even before we got there, so we just hopped into a cab.
The Park is great....lovely and green with tall trees and many wild deer roaming around...there's stalls all over the place which sell 'Deer Biscuits" and boy...those deer are really smart - they wait around the stalls, and the moment you hand over the money and take your pack of biscuits, they converge on you....it's manic!! They don't seem dangerous, but little kids need to be careful.
There are many fabulous temples in the park - we loved the Todaiji temple which is one of the tallest all wood man-made structure in the world..it's gorgeous!! Also visited the Botanical garden( we are horticulture enthusiasts) - loved the wisteria...(next best thing after the Cherry Blossoms). There's also a Pagoda here which is quite beautiful...in fact there's quite a few temples and ponds and the like...all within walking distance of each other, so you can spend a nice day walking about, enjoying the various sights, eating the yummy soft icecreams from the many stalls, feeding the savvy deer. It was a good trip and we were glad we went.
Tip - There's a Visitor's Information centre on the main road as you approach the park, where there's lovely clean toilets and they have a nice place with aircon to sit and rest and have some complimentary green tea and the attendants speak english....our kids loved just sitting and relaxing here for a bit.

Before you reach the first temple Kofukuji, you will see deer along the road and the way to the temple will be filled with them. They cross the roads themselves when cars stop, they are outside office buildings, some are at the waterside, others hungrily waiting near temples for feeding. People are very comfortable with them, they are comfortable and know they are safe roaming around Nara. So beautiful... Walk from Kofukuji to Todaiji and you will see the deer everywhere. It is not just a deer park, it is a park where deers roam around freely and they are everywhere in Nara.
