“I was completely astonished!”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

I went there during the afternoon and then again very early the next morning. Guess when it was better? Anyway, I spent a total of more than an hour in this amazing place... the Buddha is fantastic and so serene... I loved it!

“Definitely worth the time”
Reviewed July 15, 2013

It doesn't take long to view todai-ji. Maybe 15 minutes once inside. But it's absolutely amazing. The statues have been through the times- the buddha had recently lost its head, and was replaced (you can tell by the colour difference). There are lots of deer wondering around outside too, and stalls :) There is a free garden nearby, all you need to do is show your passport.

“magnificent temple”
Reviewed July 10, 2013

This is a must see if you decide to visit nara. This wooden temple is one of the largest in the world and we were really awed by its size and architecture. The city of Nara has a lot of free roaming deer so outside the temple there are lots of them. You can buy biscuits to feed them but be very careful as they can bite and they crowd around you as soon as you get to buy the biscuits. Its about an hour to two from kyoto, and we did our trip with a tour company. It was definitely worth it.

“A must see!”
Reviewed July 9, 2013

A truly amazing temple, the statues are huge & magnificent, you defiantly should go there as a day trip. The train takes less then an hour.

Don't think twice - go there! Just watch out of the deers, we got knocked out a few times :)

“Worth the long drive from Kyoto”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

With so many shrines and temples to see in Kyoto, it was hard to justify the 1.5 hour bus ride. We signed up with Sunrise tours for a Kyoto/Nara full day tour. Walking into the temple made the trip worthwhile. If you travel with children, there is a column in the back that has a hole cut into it the size of the Buddha's nostril. The kids (or maybe you) can have fun crawling thru the hole. The park surrounding the temple is filled with many tame deer. They do get a little aggressive when they smell the crackers you can buy to feed them. Great fun for the kids.
