“Worth the long drive from Kyoto”
Reviewed July 7, 2013

With so many shrines and temples to see in Kyoto, it was hard to justify the 1.5 hour bus ride. We signed up with Sunrise tours for a Kyoto/Nara full day tour. Walking into the temple made the trip worthwhile. If you travel with children, there is a column in the back that has a hole cut into it the size of the Buddha's nostril. The kids (or maybe you) can have fun crawling thru the hole. The park surrounding the temple is filled with many tame deer. They do get a little aggressive when they smell the crackers you can buy to feed them. Great fun for the kids.

“Interesting Visit”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

This was my first temple that I visited in Japan. It was beautiful and unlike anything I had ever seen before. The buddah statue was neat to see as it gave me an authentic feeling of delving into Japanese culture.

“It's BIG!!”
Reviewed July 3, 2013

Unfortunately it's not the original and 75% of full size when re-built... (but still very large)... need the large structure to hold the large Buddah inside...
The deer around the temple is pesty... but cute.
Find the time and don't neglect the other attactions in the area... you need to walk to the "smaller" atracttions... even if you have time only for the Todaiji area...

“Must see Buddhist temple in Nara”
Reviewed June 28, 2013

This is the most popular and visited attraction in Nara. Quite busy and crowded, but worth a visit.
First went up to February Hall to see a view of Nara from a vantage point. Then walked down to the main temple, seeing many deer along the way. They're so tame.
The big Buddha statue is really amazing. The mellow, compassionate facial expression. There were other statues within. Also the usual writing of wishes and prayers on a placard. There was a fascinating hole that is supposed to confer actualization if one can squeeze through it, only young kids can manage to do that.
Outside the temple, there is the usual souvenir shops, a lot of deer walking around and people feeding them deer cookies( sold at the souvenir stores).
All in all a must see experience.
