This is a site not to be missed if you are in the area of Kyoto or Nara. It is an amazingly large wooden structure (we were told that it is the world's largest wooden building) with what is currently the largest Buddha in the world. The statue represents the Virocana Buddha, and is 49 feet tall. The history of the temple is fabulous, and I would recommend getting a tour guide so as not to miss out on the details.

This temple is simply outstanding. For the moment you step on the gigantic wooden gate, you'll be greeted by two enormous temple guardians (both were beautifully carved, by the way). Inside the temple which is claimed as the largest wooden structure in the world, you will find the giant Buddha. Also, just for fun, you can try to pass a small hole in one of the column. People say if you can pass through, you will be granted with a long and prosperous life. If you're an artist/architect/art enthusiast you will be very happy here. So are the kids (my kids, at least) but mostly because of the herd of deer. As for the facilities, the temple is well-equipped, there are ramps for stroller and wheelchair, toilets, souvenir shops and of course you will find the ever-present vending machines.

We visited Nara on a day trip and planned to see, among others, the very famous Todaji Temple. When picking up maps at the Tourist Information Desk in the Nara JR Station, we were offered, and pleased to take, student travel guide service at the Tourist Infornation Desk. With the assistance of two university student volunteers, we had a wonderful time visiting Todaji Temple, Kasuga Shrine, and Hofukuji Temple. The student volunteers were friendly and spoke fluent English and shared with us much about the history and culture of the city. We really appreciated this service and would highly recommend this to first-time visitors to Nara.
Todaji Temple is on the top of our must-see list in Nara. The temple itself is awesome, a truly magnificent architecture. The deer outside were another major tourist attraction. Just be careful not to get knocked over when you try to feed them. There are souvenir shops and restaurants along the omotesando, i.e., the path leading to the temple. More eatery choices are available in the restaurant village right next to the temple. We had lunch in one of these restaurants and found the food delicious and price reasonable.

To say this is the largest wooden building in the world means nothing until you are actually standing in front of it. It is amazing! The giant budha inside is pretty impressive also. The grounds are well kept.
