If you join this tour, see Todaiji temple and the surrounding park, then return to Naramachi for dinner (equipped with recommendations from the tour), your day trip to Nara will be perfect. As luck had it, we were the only ones to join Yoshiko for the morning. She had perfect English, was extremely knowledgeable about Nara and the roots of Japanese culture in general, and is clearly enthusiastic about Naramachi and all that is has to offer. She pointed out local shops offering many items in which we were interested but would never have discovered otherwise, and acted as translator to help us find exactly what we were looking for. The visit to a traditional merchant house was interesting and very relaxing. She left us with plenty of recommendations that helped us flesh out our entire day in Nara.

We took the Nara Machi walking tour on 5/29/13 and really loved it. We booked on line and it turned out to be a personal tour, just the two of us! Our guide, Satomi, is warm and friendly and knows a lot about the history and art of Nara. She speaks beautiful English and it was really great to have the chance to talk with her over a glass of Yuzu lime juice in a traditional house. We saw streets we would never have found on our own and got a good sense of traditional architecture as well as the history of Nara. She showed us traditional stores, some of which have been there for centuries. No pressure to buy at all, but you'll find that the products (linen cloth, malt syrup and candies, Chinese farmacy) help tell the story of Nara. I strongly recommend this tour, it will really complement the temple and park and round our your visit to Nara.

If you think that Nara is only Todaiji and Kasuga-taisha, this tour is an excellent opportunity for you to discover lovely streets and secret hidden treasures of this ancient town. The tour was so good we even forgot about time and distance that we walked on our way! No point of telling too much about destinations coz it will ruin the wonder of adventure. Our guide Hatcho Yoshiko-san is a great person conducting this tour for years and giving foreign visitors a wonderful insight into the secrets of Japan. A must-do thing in Nara!

Hands down this is one of the best guided walks I have been on! Yushiko speaks wonderful english and is so incredibly kind and generous with not only her knowledge of Nara but also with her time. Not at any moment did the tour feel rushed, there was always plenty of time to ask questions and take photos and there was even time for a quick coffee ( my partner and I spied a LaMarzocco coffee machine through a cafe window and we all went in together for a delicious espresso! )
Do yourself a favor and take a walk with Yushiko - both her enthusiasm and love for Nara are highly contagious. Highlight of our trip!

If you are interested in seeing old Japan, then this tour is worth it. It leaves from the Kintetsu Nara train station tourist information centre at 10am sharp - regardless of how big or small the group is. There were only four of us that day making it nice and intimate. Our guide, Yoshiko Hatcho, was fantastic. She took us through the warren that is Nara-machi, to some fascinating places we would probably never have spotted on our own - including old tea houses, okiya (where Nara's geisha live), an old tea shop and an old medicinal house. As she knows the locals, we were also able to get a more in-depth experience of a preserved old house then visitors normally would. Yoshiko was also a wealth of information on the old customs and traditions of the people of Nara, and the best shops and places to frequent. She made us want to revisit Nara and spend a night there instead of a day trip! If anything, it would have been nice to have a break midway through the tour, perhaps at a tea house, just to break things up a little. Otherwise it is a very worthwhile experience.
