We stayed at nara hotel for 3 days and had lunch the last day before departing for the airport. I mean the food tastes like a fast food restaurant on the highway in Europe. Economy class ticket beef curry on a low cost airline is of the same taste. This regarding the beef curry. My wife ordered chicken pilaf. I would call it butter pilaf with traces of chicken. Absolutely terrible. I order hamburger. Almost as good as mc Donalds. I definitely do not recommend this restaurant. I think it is a petty for such a nice hotel to offer such food.

Lovely beef curry and very nice local Chardonnay here. Professional staffs, foods are great and not overpriced at all for French restaurant. I can't ask for more.

We came to Mikasa just to try its famous beef curry, and it didn't let us down. The beef, the curry and the rice were all good, and most importantly, they were well integrated. The service could be improved but we care more about the food than the service anyway. Will definitely come back when we visit Nara next time.

The restaurant has a romantic setting with nice glimpse of a pond. The food was overpriced. We ordered chicken cutlet and "boiled" fish. The chicken was very mediocre quality and fish had about 4 bites and very little flavor. The most shocking were the wine prices. The quarter of a glass of an average St Emilion was $20. Considering that it was a French highly priced restaurant, we expected larger wine selection. Besides the wine was served in wrong glasses. The service was very polite but inept.

Mikasa has two dining sections.

The large, high-ceilinged main dining room is a striking mix of Japanese and western. The coffered wood ceiling, hanging lamps, and wood framing of the walls, doors, and windows are all Japanese. The tables, chairs, table settings are all western. The space is elegantly beautiful, a harmony of browns and greens, but sometimes overrun by Japanese tour groups.

On the west and north sides of the main dining room is an L-shaped terrace with a single line of tables set against window walls. These tables overlook a maple forest, and beyond that the celebrated Five-Storey Pagoda of Kofukuji Temple. If you eat at Mikasa, try to snag one of these tables. You’ll spend your meal looking at the Japan of your dreams.

The food doesn’t live up to the view. It’s billed as French, but it’s really more like Basic Western: fried fish, chicken cutlet, steak. It’s well-cooked and artfully presented – is food ever really bad in Japan? – but Mikasa’s cuisine isn’t going to expand your culinary horizons. On the other hand, with a view like that, who cares?
