“Small but lovely Ryokan in good Nara location”
Reviewed December 8, 2012

Don't be put off by the exterior or the reception area of this hotel! On arrival I thought we'd made a terrible mistake but the staff couldn't have been nicer and once they'd shown us to our room and the spa, we felt a lot happier. It's very traditional which makes it a great ryokan - tatami floors, futon beds and yukata as well as the wonderful hot spring baths. The food was also wonderful with lots of regional touches and some of the history behind the dishes was so lovely to hear about. The staff were incredibly generous with their time in explaining everything and on our second night, they served us dinner in our room which was a fantastic experience - we went for Shabu shabu!
It's 5mins to the major sites and 15mins on the bus from the station so great location.
There is quite a variation in room size so it's worth going for the larger room! The small ones are really narrow.
People often recommend doing Nara as a day trip from Kyoto but stay over as there is so much to do and it's a much slower pace than Kyoto.

Beautiful hotel, an onset (Japanese bath), Fantastic dinner and breakfast, friendly staff.

It is conveniently located near the historic area. They provide a wonderful walking map to get your Nara trip started.

Rooms, food, and bath are Japanese style, which in my opinion makes this a wonderful experience. (The toilet is western style. :) you are provided with robes, like kimono, to wear throughout the hotel. Dinner is served in your room and was an amazing, authentic kaiseki meal. We choose to have the kaiseki meal both nights. Each meal was different, so the surprise of the upcoming course was so exciting. We chose to enjoy Japanese breakfast, and it was fresh, delicious and somewhat surprising.

Since it is located so near the sights, a nighttime walk through Nara with the temples, pagodas, and sights that are lit nightly, you can venture out after dinner. We visited in August and found the night walks to be a magical way to end the day.

While the deer don't wander the hotel, the are cruising the nearby parks and temples.

Friendly staff will help, and even though not every member of staff speaks fluent English, they are far more fluent in English than I am in Japanese. If toy need additional help, a staff member who knows English will help.

The onsen is clean, beautiful, and I screwed up my courage to go to the public bath. I purchased the book "How to Take a Japanese Bath" prior to our trip. Visiting the Hotel New Wakasa make visiting an onsen something I was able to add to my trip.

This hotel was the best spent vacation money. The Hotel New Wakasa exceeded. My expectations.

Room Tip: We loved our 10 tatami room. It had a wonderful main living space and a separate sitting area with a...

frankly, the building is quite strange from the outside. i was a bit shocked. not that much, just surprised. the lobby is as strange as the building.

the room (at least ours) was fantastic.
for me it is the traditional japanese style. pure, functional and beautiful.
cool bathroom and whirlpool on the terrace. wow!
staff was extremely friendly and helpful.
breakfast was huge. i mean it. huge.
overall, it's a pretty good hotel.
