Stayed just for the night. Room was quite small, but that is something you tend to expect in budget hotels in Japan. Good enough place to sleep for the night if you are on a business trip. Nothing much around late at night, except a convenient store.

Yes the Nikko delivers precisely what you would expect from a big city business focussed hotel chain. Clean, good sized rooms, an efficient staff and very handy for the railway station.

On the downside there are no personal touches - no free coffee; no internet lounge and no self laundry.

It just does what a good business hotel does - providing comfortable overnight accomodation on your way somewhere else - and you will forget all about it next week

When in Japan I often stay at the hotels near the train station because they are convenient, the staff usually speaks English and they are less expensive than the more atmospheric/charming ryokans. As such, the Nikko Himeji hit the spot. We arrived at Osaka airport and took a bus directly to Himeji. We got there around 9:30pm and found the hotel was about a five minute walk from the front of the train station (there is some construction going on but the bus driver pointed us in the right direction and we found it easily and were relieved not to have to climb any stairs with our suitcases). Our room was small and smelled of cigarette smoke and all the hotel restaurants were shut but we were so tired that we really didn't mind. The next morning we enjoyed the buffet breakfast and the 15 minute walk to the castle. Buying train tickets for our next destination was easy and we wandered around the covered shopping mall near the station. The rest of our trip was wonderful (don't miss Naoshima island and the Benesse museums) and the Nikko Himeji was a fine way to begin our trip.

Not too bad. All rooms in Japan are small, but the one I got was pack. Anyway, it is very convenient as it is near the Shinkansen station within walking distance. For business stay and a one nite stop over stay, this will be good. Quick check in and out. Otherwise, not recommended for leisure.

Absolutely loved the Nikko! I was right across the street from the train station and within walking distance to Himeji Castle. The rooms were clean, quiet and comfortable. Complimentary breakfast was very nice with plenty of options. The staff was helpful.

We spent 4 nights there and attended a wedding on the property. It was expertly handled - a fantastic experience.

I have stayed at this hotel many times since my first trip in 1999. It used to be called the SunGarden. As far as I can tell, the only thing the Nikko chain has done to the hotel is raise the prices. I paid 10,500 Yen in April 2006 and then 19,000 Yen in May 2007 for the same room.

The key feature of this hotel is the location - just across the street from the JR Station. This is a stop on some, but not all shinkansens. The local train station is just on the other side of the shinkansen station. The Himeji Castle is about 1 km away and an easy walk from the hotel (the worst part is finding your way through the rail stations and out the other side to the street).

The rooms are rather drab but of course clean and efficient. TV is all Japanese channels. You can buy a TV card in the hallway for 1,000 Yen to get 1-2 English movie channels and a couple of adult channels. The phone system is not able to transmit data so you cannot use your computer modem over the phone line. High speed internet service has become available in recent years although I do not think it is available on all floors - be sure to check when you make your reservation if you need Internet service. A charge of 2,000 Yen (I think?) is added to your room for high speed internet service, cables are provided.

The restaurants are good and like most hotel restaurants, relatively expensive. There is a wide variety of restaurants on the castle side of the train station. The first floor lobby is nice and doubles as a coffee shop by day and cocktail bar in the evening. The top floor lounge affords a good view of the Himeji Castle at night if you can afford the drink prices.

I recomend this hotel for business travellers and others having a reason to stay in Himeji. For tourists, I suggest you stop in Himeji long enough to see the beautiful Himeji Castle and then move on. If you stop in Himeji for 4-6 hours you'll have plenty of time to go see the Himeji Castle; be sure to walk to the top. In my opinion, the Himeji Castle is really the only reason to even stop in Himeji as a tourist. It is the most spectacular castle still standing in Japan.
