This place is eccentrically run, but great fun. Overseen by a Japanese couple with excellent English, their staff seemed to consist almost entirely of European and American backpackers providing labour in exchange for free lodging. It makes it a bit haphazard, but enormously friendly and relaxing. Both breakfast and evening meals are served on communal tables - we thought the evening meals in particular were excellent value. Our rooms varied - one was spotless, albeit with a monumentally hard and uncomfortable bed; the bed in the other was fine, but one glance underneath it told us that housekeeping was - shall we say - haphazard. But just as when the toilet backed up, the staff responded swiftly and effectively. The overall atmosphere of the place was very sympathetic, and the exact antithesis of a chain hotel.

Fantastic for walkers as it really is mountainside. Close to town and the main Temples. 5 minute walk to a cheap Onsen. Pretty and leafy, but is very much a budget lodge. Bed's and pillows as hard as concrete (needed a physiotherapist after sleeping there), sheets didn't fit the bed at all so ended up in a ball under our backs, one very thin small towel each for the full 5 day stay, menu very limited and not great food. Wi-fi in rooms was erratic and dropped out at critical times for us. But owner's English impeccable, staff friendly, rooms a good size........it's really set up as a skiing style lodge for those with budget intentions who just need place to plonk at night after a hard days skiing.

Nikko Park Lodge mountainside is a short shuttle car ride from Tobu Nikko station, within the mountains. The staff speak English very well, and are happy to help you whenever they can (even lent me his phone to skype my bank when I had troubles). The rooms are large (bathroom is small though), with wifi (both rooms and lobby). The breakfast was adequate. Located a short walk away from the temples, a beautiful base from which to explore Nikko. Would definitely stay here again!

This guesthouse is a very cosy place in a nice tranquil location in the nature. The mainstreet is 30min away by foot, and the shrines are within 30min. The breakfast is ok. Rooms are nice and silent. The owners are nice and good englishspeakers.

We spent four delightful days in this hotel as home and will stay there again. This small hotel lives up to all its claims. Rooms were well decorated and spacious. Staff was courteous, polite, and helpful. The front desk staff were especially helpful. We loved the ambiance.
